Berger 30 cal. 230g hybrid target vs. OTM

I believe that OTM is simply a designation that avoids “hollow-point” verbiage, in the industry. There may be certain purposes or purchasers, that avoid the term hollow point.

This was going to be in a single shot, so length wouldn't be an issue.
But good to know.
I know the military at one time avoided the "hollow point" term.
They are slightly different in length and shape.
Very slight difference in G7

^ They come in a gray box that reminds me of naval vessels.

i have not shot both, but i have/do shoot the hybrid target out to 2000 yards.
SEAL mk13 rifle 300 win mag sorta 5.5-22x scope at just past one mile i have hit single shots on about 2moa steel 30 mins apart..not sighters...dial and shoot 3.6xx oal

From Berger:

“The Tactical bullet is made on a shorter jacket so the nose lengths allow a COAL that will feed through a magazine and shoot well in standard issue chambers. The target bullet is on a longer jacket and will not meet COAL standards and most likely will not function through a magazine, but this longer jacket gives the Target bullet a higher BC than the Tactical.”

Berger used to say the longer 230 Tactical had a BC G1 .743 and I think the G7 .380 but without looking at one of my older boxes of bullets I'm not positive on that but then they changed and lowered the 230 Tactical BC to nearly identical of the 230 OTM.

Per Berger's measurements of both bullets the 230 Tactical appears to be the more sleek slick bullet so I've always been a bit confused as to why they have, basically, identical BC's.

I have used both in a 300RUM. Ran them at same length 3.060 CBTO and the same charge. OTM’s are shorter if that’s why you need.

Photo L to R. Berger 230H, 230OTM, and 208LRHT. All 3.060 CBTO.

They are the same bullet.

Not Quite

I had poor results on deer with the OTM, the TGT(or match) and VLD may be the same but VLD typically has a thinner jacket and TGT has thicker jacket. the older VLD became the orange hunter bullet.
OTM were grey
but they are all yellow box now.

All you have to do is look at post #8 and see that they are not the same bullet.
Just wondered if they shot differently and how much?
You can find the OTM bullets once in awhile, but haven't seen the hybrids
for a long time.

If loading to mag length of around 3.62” COAL in a .300 Win Mag, I found the 230 OTM’s to be much more accurate in 4 different .300 WM custom rifles.

If you plan to single feed and are not concerned with overall cartridge length then the 230 Hybrid Targets shoot well and they have a slight advantage in terms of BC. But it’s not a huge difference. I prefer the Hybrid OTM as it has been so easy to tune in my rifles.

The person that said they were the same bullet works for Berger Technical Support.

Great! Then maybe they can explain what the difference is between the Berger 30 cal 230gr Hybrid Target PN # 30428 with G1 .743 G7 .380 and Berger 30 Cal 230gr Hybrid Target PN # 30430 with G1 .717 G7 .368

The appear to be identical bullets, have the same Hybrid Target label, but have two different part numbers and different BC's.

If Berger is saying those two bullets are one and the same I'd buy that but to say the OTM and Hybrid Target are identical bullets, not so much.

.30 caliber 230 OTM HYBRID bullet G7 BC = 0.364. ( #30112)
.30 caliber 230 HYB TGT bullet G7 BC = 0.368 ( #30430 )
