Berger 220 LRHT 300wsm

Now that my season is over, I'm going to play around with the 300wsm. Currently shooting a straight 284 in FClass and that's what I'll be using the 300wsm for.

Anyway, I'm looking at using the 215 hybrid but they are nowhere to be found. However I can get my hands on some 220 LRHT. I will be using RL23 or h4350, I have both on hand.

Does anyone have first hand experience with the 220? What velocity should I expect out of a 32" Brux barrel? How about freebore, will the 220 require more?

Just trying to see if I should wait for the 215 or go ahead and pick up some 220. Also the 208 look interesting. Looking for the best combo to perform better than the 284 on the heavy wind days.

Yeah, with the 220gr, I'd go straight to RL23. Do not chase speed with this bullet - your best accuracy will likely come under 2850fps.

The 208 Bergers work well in a 300 WSM....almost as good as 215s.
Maybe one of these days 215s will be available....

If I'm not mistaken the 220's and RL23 just set the new 1000BR record this year

Thanks for all the replies. I got my hands on some 220 LRHT and some 208LRHT. I will do extensive testing with both over course of the off-season.

Looks like the accuracy is there (at least for the 220). But after running numbers in my ballistic app and quickload, I'm not very excited. From a ballistic standpoint on paper, these 2 offerings seem like a step back from a pointed 215hybrid or pointed 230hybrid.

Maybe real world will show something that a program or app can't predict!

215S should be hitting dealers in NOV 2022 . If you need 220 LRHT load data please contact us: Support@capstonepg.com Thanks !

I like how the 208’s shoot in my wsm. 65.5 gr reloder 23 gives me 2860’s fps out of my 24” brux. So they should scoot out a 30-32”. Its just a long range steel/hunting rig but it shoots good. Shot it out to a mile, bc is pretty good.

Thanks for the update. I'll be on the lookout for the 215's.

I will start low and work up to your load. I will post back once I get some testing in. Still waiting on barrel and reamer but should have everything in the next month.

Got out today to test the 220 with rl23. I found something at 2850. Which is odd since most are running 2800 or 2900....

Anyway I like what the target was telling me. Definitely worth testing further.

This was ocw method so round robin at 100 yards. .010 jump. I can tighten that up with seating depth and tuner adjustment.

Keep in mind, I'm running a lot of freebore. So these are good for my rifle.

I’ve been shooting the 220 for a while now in a 300 NMI. Not apples to apples but I have had good luck with the 220.

Don’t worry about freebore if your reamer is set up for the 215. As far as base to ogive, bearing surface length, and OAL goes the 220 is so close to the 215 it will work perfectly in a reamer set for the 215. Velocities will be very similar as well.

I found that the 220 seems to shoot more consistently with seating depth changes when you are running a jam. You may or may not find the same thing in your rifle but worth a try. I also had much better luck in ladder testing using the CCI 250 over the federal 215GM Match.

Pic of 220gr along with 215gr, and 245gr Bergers. You can see that the 215 and 220 profiles are nearly the same.

You might also want to try the Berger 185gr Juggernaut. Many of the guys are finding that to be the easiest to tune and most forgiving bullet in the 300 WSM.

Also the 215 BERGERS SHOULD BE HITTING DEALERS IN Jan/Feb/Mar/ 2023 SO GET ON ALL THE NOTIFY / BACKORDER lists you can so you are standing in line! Cast a " WIDE NET" to improve your chances!!

I got my hands on some 215. Load development looks good. Better than the 220 but still in the early stages of testing.

Any updates?
I settled on a load at 2920fps. I then switched to h4831sc due to random fliers. I still got the random fliers with the h4831sc. I ended up abandoning the 300wsm to the 7-6.5 prc.

I think the fliers are from the added recoil and my lack of rifle handling.

If I were to visit this round again, I think I would look into the 230gr Berger

At that velocity with the 220gr you'd be rattling the fillings in your teeth. I push them with H4831sc at 2800fps and they hold the X-ring at 1000 yards. Recoil is stout, but manageable below 2850fps.
