Berger 185 Hybrid & Varget

I got plenty of Varget an just picked up 200 ct of Berger 185 Hybrid bullets. Looking for a good starting point.
I'm shooting single shot action, .341"neck, Freebore is .090”, barrel is 1:10 twist and finished length of 27¾ inches.
Mainly shooting 300, 600, 1000 yards.
Thanks for any help.

i would start at 43 and work up try jumping 10 to 15 thou. I shoot a 12 twist and a 10 will be a little different

for shooting 300 to 600 i would take a look at the 155.5 or the 155 hybrid. For 800 to 1000 the 185 LR or Hybrid

I did my ladder test from 42.2 - 44.0. I ended up at 43.0, seated .010 off. My velocity is 2660. I'm shooting a Brux 10 twist, 28", Winchester prepped brass.

I know this is of topic but why use a 10 twist with a 308. I use a 12 and can shoot 210 bergers to 1000 yards with no problem. With a 10 twist all your doing is losing a little velocity. I shoot 185LR bergers 2825 and 210s at 2640 with a 12 twist. Why a 10 twist i have always wondered

I hope it does get good.... Thanks for the info. I might give the 155.5 or the 155 hybrid a try after I figure out the 185 Hybrid.
As for as the 10 twist, I cant remember why I went the 10 twist. It shoots 175 SMK & 42.5 of Varget quite well. But always looking
for better groups.

LESLEY , which is your go to bullet for 1000 yards? Also, who's the barrel maker and what lenght is it? Sorry LAKESNAKE for hijacking your thread, the info ma help us both. I'm going to build a .308 for 1000 yard FTR and I'm looking at the Bergers.

I went with a 10 twist because my intentions were to shoot Berger 185 Hybrids or 208 Amax's. The 185 Hybrids did well enough, with less recoil, I stuck with them.

Out to 600 yards I agree on the 155.5's.

Both of my F T/R rifles are 10 twist barrels and I shoot the 185 LRBT's. I am happy with the performance.

My barrel is a gain twist taper bore. Its ends in a 12 twist. I run 28inch barrels. I use RL-15 and shoot the berger LR 185.

Lesley,

A faster twist (1-11) is needed for the 185 and 200 hybrid. You'll need a 1-10 for the 215 and 230 hybrid bullets.

The 185 hybrid might shoot in a 12 twist if it's really warm outside. If it is cold, the 200's tend to open up in an 11 twist. It is really about bullet choice, stability and group size.

Personally, I have one barrel in a 10 twist, another in 11, and a third in 12. They all do different jobs and are different lengths. All future barrels will be of the 10 twist variety because I found absolutely no downsides, save slightly increased aerodynamic jump, to using a 10 twist with even 155 grain bullets and an Sg over 2. Since aerodynamic jump is something we all should be correcting for anyway, it isn't a big deal.

I shot 5 five shot groups today at 100 yards. 42-44gr of Varget with the Berger 185 Hybrid bullets touching the lands. Think Ill call it good with 44gr.

All my .308 rifles have 10" twist barrels except for a Steyr SSG69 with the factory 12" twist. I shoot bullets from Berger FULLBORE 155.5 to 230 Hybrids. In one 26" barrel tactical rifle, the 155.5 shoots outstandingly well. I won a 1000 yard match at Camp Pendleton with it. That rifle shoots well enough that I am likely to use it in the Arizona State Mid Range Championship in April. I agree with Busdriver and have seen no downside.
