Berger 155.5 Fullbore and imr4064

Okay so I just bought 3500 same lot Berger 155.5 Fullbore a have 24lbs same lot of 4064, gonna be hand loading for .308. It’s a 700 blueprinted action with a 30” ibi barrel 1-11.25 twist using a 2011 Fullbore chamber. Brass is all Norma, primers (5000) S&B LR. Anybody have any data on these or use (have experience) this powder bullet combo?I know most of you will say use Varget. Hmmmm, I bet I would have a easier time finding the arc of the covenant than finding Varget.

You're set! Don't sweat not having Varget; it's not the be all end all. I've shot most of my smallest groups with 4064, from a 22BR all the way up to 30-06, and have a real sweet spot in my heart for it. I will always have some in my cabinet. It will take a small charge weight tweak during large temp swings to stay in the node, but it's closer in stability to Varget than it is to AA2200, my new poster child for instability.

I think you'll find about 44gns to work pretty well. Back that down to start though! I shot it with the 155 A-Max and 155 SMK. I never got around to trying the Berger, but I'd be quite surprised if you don't find a load that will work very well.

Truth right there. I use 8208xbr which is unfortunately also hard to find, but here's an example of what it will do with thrown charges (and iron sights).

I had strongly considered picking up some 4064, but managed to get my hands a bunch of n140 and sw precision so I'm set for a while.

Mine likes the 4064 and 168 SMK's...shoots real small with 43.5gr and Norma brass.
That’s why I have all the 4064 I was gonna chooot 168’s but. Realized for some reason they’re really not great to 1000m. Yet 155/175’s are, so buy chance i checked one of our distributors and they had 35 boxes of 155.5 all same lot. So i bought it all. Actually it was the only Berger’s in 30cal they had left. I also picked up 1500 155 SMK same lot 2155’s. i will try both see which choot better then sell WITHOUT GOUGING the left overs. Or keep em who knows?

It appears that you may be shooting Fullbore and/or Palma. It's likely that you may not get enough powder in the case to get the speed desired for competition at 1,000 yards. All the other yard lines are probably OK.

4064 has fairly small kernels, if you have plenty of free bore you should get Er done.

I like H4895 under a 155

If I'm not mistaken I think 4064 has been used in the past for U.S Palma Team ammo, so it should get you there.

The 2155 is an older design and doesn't have quite the BC the 2156 or 155.5 has so you'll get beat up by the wind more. .214 vs .242 G7 means a difference of 1.4 min of wind (10 mph full value) at 1K according to Strelok.

47.5gr compressed load 4064 gives 2871 in a 24” barrel according to Hodgdon website. 6” more at about 25fps per inch gives 3021ish. According to the Berger ballistic calculator it will go transonic at 1225 yards or 1125m. So more than enough jam. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating so we will see.

I fully intend on doing load development just wanted to hear that I’m not being handicapped by using IMR4064. I know both (Varget and 4064) are compressed and at around 47grs. It’s also temp sensitive (4064).Others experience with it. Once the rife is completed I will post some results.

Well the rifle is completed here’s the pics from the smith of its accuracy out to 100m 500m 1000m. You can see the load they used was Varget. Time to start some development. So excited!!!!

The 155.5 is an outstanding bullet and IMR 4064 would be the bullet of choice for me. That combo has always given outstanding accuracy for me.

I have developed multiple loads for multiple rifles. They are all a little different as every rifle has its own personality. My only suggestion is to start a couple grains from max and work up until the rifle let's you know when to stop.
