Bergara B14 6.5 Creedmoor - Trigger Issue

Hey fella`s, i`m not sure if i posted this in the right spot or not, if it isn`t, i apologize, the mods can move it where it would be better. I looked for a gunsmithing area, but i didnt see one in its own group or sub-group, so i thought i would try to post the thread here.

The trigger issue: what i seem to be having, is that the set screw (outside of the gun just ahead of the trigger), keeps loosening up and almost falling out. I don`t really want to lose the screw. Even if i set the screw all the way back in to the 3lb, and its tight, it still works its way back loose. What do you guy`s do to keep it tight? Do you put a tiny drop of blue loctite on the threads and thread it back to your specific setting?

I can`t think of anything else i can do to keep it tight in there besides some loctite on the threads. Every 10rds or so, i have to screw it back up into the trigger housing. Its really annoying, not to mention, the trigger gets a bit lite`r when it comes out till it just about falls out of the gun. I like the trigger being lite, but i don`t want to lose the screw either. Is there a good reason to leave the set screw in it, or can i just remove it and be ok(?)

I notice the trigger being down around 2 pounds when its fully unscrewed, but still hanging on by a thread and does nothing.

Anyways, if you have questions, i`ll try to answer them the best that i can. If you have an easy fix, that would be GREAT!

Thanks guy`s.

Not at all familiar with your trigger, but on some of mine I have used Loc-Tite or a small dab of nail polish.
Nail polish, ugh, i`ve done that many times in the past, just didn`t come to mind this time. Gettin old has its moments, lol. Thank you for the tip ES. When the wife isn`t looking, i may try to steal a dab of her nail polish, lol.

For others viewing the thread, any ideas whether i can just remove the set screw, or not. I don`t really want to take the gun apart just to pull the trigger out of it just see if i can just remove the set screw and run alright without it or not.

My Bergara B14 trigger adjustment screw is facing forward on the front of the trigger housing and not accessible without removing the stock.

Do you have a Premier or a standard B14?

I know it isn`t the premier, so its likely the B14 standard (6.5Creedmoor - medium heavy barrel). I bought the rifle locally at Sportsmens Warehouse a couple weeks ago. It came with a OEM Omni muzzle brake on it, but that`s about all i know about the rifle. I can`t even find this rifle in the Bergara catalog. I ended up with the Bergara because i returned a brand new Savage that i bought there, got it home, ran the borescope down the barrel, and half of one side of the barrel, there was NO rifling. How that got past quality control is another story.

I took the stock off from the action (reluctantly), there are NO trigger adjustment screws on the trigger body, only adjustment screw is the set screw right ahead of the trigger, accessible without removing the stock.

I also noticed tonight, with the firing pin decocked, with the bolt fully closed in the gun, the bolt wiggles ALOT, fore an aft, also its sloppy sideways! I`ve never seen a bolt this loose in a gun before, and i`ve been working on an shootin guns for 60 years. When you open the bolt to cock the firing pin, the bolt has no slop. Is this a Bergara thing? I`ve never seen this before, and doesn`t seem normal, to me.

Just put an aftermarket trigger on it.
I don`t feel the need to replace the one that`s in it. It works fine, i just need to glue the set screw in so that it doesn`t keep loosening up. I`m now more concerned about another possible issue that i just found tonight with the bolt being very sloppy. You can actually move the bolt fore & aft while locked up, firing pin spring relaxed. Once the bolt is cocked, the bolt is tight. I`m gonna have to look into this before i shoot it again. This does not seem right, to me.

That sounds perfectly normal for a factory rifle, or even most rifles. I suspect you're feeling the bolt nose - barrel clearance. Once the action is cocked the spring in the bolt/cocking piece and trigger sear are holding things tight.

If the spring is in a well or otherwise contained, you may not need the setscrew; however, sometimes the point of the screw is used to fix the end of the spring in place. Murphy is such a fun guy - the spring will fall out at the least convenient time if it can. I'd suggest a LocTite (purple?) that cures to a rubbery consistency, allowing you to adjust the screw without having to remove and clean it.

I agree @Leeman . I did some more looking into it, seems its normal. So i`ll not worry to much about it. It just seemed a little bit more loose than any of my other rifles. When you cock the bolt, all play is gone. So obviously, chambering a round in it will be even tighter. When i put a round in the chamber, the bolt works very smooth when you open the bolt to eject the case. At this point, i`m not going to lose anymore sleep over it.

As for the trigger set screw i had questions about, i put a film of Loc-Tite on the set screw, should be ok now.

At some point, when funds allow, i will be replacing the OEM trigger.

Thank you so much guys, for helping an old guy out here, very much appreciated!
