BENCHRITE CASE LATHE TORQUE

XXPER

Silver $$ Contributor
I am starting with Lapua 308 brass which I have bumped the shoulder back 3/8 inch to create a 30x44. The new shoulder is well into the body of the case. The brass in the new neck is very hard to turn and I was wondering if the Benchrite case lathe has enough torque to turn this brass?Does anyone know the torque rating of the Benchrite?

Should I anneal the new neck area before turning the necks?

I am open to all suggestions
Thank you,xxper

Would it be possible to make multiple passes on the neck with the cutting tool? Start with just a couple thousandths on the first pass, then another pass with a few more thousandths?

I have never neck turned before. I am just asking if it would be possible to do it that way.

The brass in the new neck is 0.019 before turning and my finished neck is 0.0090. I make three cuts using three different turners.

Thank you

I have no idea of the torque, but it is a nice lathe and seems to be very stout.

I really like mine.

I make one pass to turn 6BR brass down to .009" with the same geared motor Benchrite uses. I purchased the motor from Zoro and made a clone of the Benchrite. There is no way you will stall it out...thats for sure. According to the specs, they have about 12 inch/lbs of torque and 181 RPM. Pretty nice motor. I made a clone WFT and trim brass on it as well. Works great.

The 1/20th HP gearmotor turns cases at 181 RPM with plenty of torque to prevent drag down when making large cuts.

181 RPM, not an option but, a gear change could speed up the RPMs and cause a loss of torque. A gear change could slow down the RPM but increase torque. A fractional horsepower motor of 1/20th HP is designed for a patient person.

$495.00, after shipping call it $500.00+.

muddy27, I agree.

I am starting with Lapua 308 brass
There is new 308 lapua brass and there is fired Lapua 308 brass. When forming cases reloaders create their own problems. I would suggest you start with new cases when forming, next best is once fired.
