Benchrest trimming with giraud?

Most Benchrest related equipment is basically a kit. The Giraud is no exception in my experience. Will explain when I get to the PC later.

Just a couple of things to watch for.

Make positive your shell holder has enough clearance for your brass to slide in and out freely. I had to take the shell holder out of the threaded piece and ended up using an old reamer in my cordless drill to hog it out so the brass had enough clearance. It was catching on the shoulder.

If you are doing a lot of brass, you may want to have the trimmer vertical. When mine was horizontal some pieces of brass flew into the shell holder and made inconsistent lengths. If your only doing a few pieces, horizontal on the trimmer will be fine for a while. I was concerned that running the trimmer vertical would be hard on the shaft seal. I'll worry about the seal later, as i want my brass consistent.

Think of it as a cutting case gauge; anything inconsistent in your sizing process (or brass) will show up in your trim lengths. I love mine about 95% of the time; I've had problems related to over-pressured brass, but it's still light years better than trimming by hand on a lathe trimmer.

If you're thinking of getting one...a couple of thoughts.

1.) Get a cutter for every caliber.
2.) If you have the ability, cut your case holders with your chamber reamers (or have a gunsmith do it). Those spring loaded ones Doug makes have too much play.
3.) If you use the ones Doug makes, wear gloves.

Even though it will cut as accurately as you can bump shoulders, I don't think trimming to the nearest thousandth shows up at all on paper. I suspect you'd have to have a significant disparity in case lengths (.010"+) to have an affect on target (even in short range benchrest).
