Benchrest Central Web site

I have not been able to get on BenchRest Central Web Site today. Has anybody else had the same problem. Hope Wilbur Harris the chief bottle washer and cook over there is doing OK. This web site 6mmBR and Benchrest Central are to of the best rifle shooters web sites on the internet. Both Paul and Wilbur run great web sites.

I was able to get on this morning but not this afternoon. I am having an issue with cutting a 13 TPI thread on my Grizzly lathe and there is a thread with a similar issue on that site and I NEED to access that info :)

Rusty,

I couldn't agree more. I always thought I knew alot about shooting, until I started reading these boards, talk about a wealth of knowledge and having access to people that are willing to share, how could it get any better.

My hat is off to both Paul and Wilbur!!

I am sure everything is ok over there, prob some server glich.

The old server was apprently maxed out with the number of connections it was getting. Wilbur seems to be in the process of upgrading to a new server.

I've seen several lathes over the years that would not cut a 13, 26 or 6 1/2 pitch thread. A very nice Nardini was the first one that I saw. There was no way to make a 1/2-13 screw on it. And it was the only lathe in the shop.......

Saturday morning, suffering withdrawl because BR Central is still down.......

It would be a good time to post a way to contribute to the new server fund. I'm sure Wilbur is rather busy right now making sure that Br.com will be available to us - maybe we should help some .

What kind of trouble are you having cutting a 13 tpi thread? As long as your lathe can be set up to cut a 13 thread, you'll probably have to hit a 1 or a 3 on the thread dial when cutting an uneven thread. You may even have to hit the same number depending upon the quirks of the lathe. A rule of thumb that I vaguely remember is to hit an odd number when cutting an odd pitch thread. Some of these imported lathes are a law unto their own, however. I know the Jet lathe that I had previously had a lot of quirks when hitting numbers on the thread dial.

The problem is, there is no "13" or "6 1/2" or "26" on the chart of where to set the levers. The gears to cut those threads are simply not present. Quite a shocker when you are at that point and cannot finish the job. 13 TPI is about 1.95 mm pitch so I don't think that you could get by with a 2mm pitch unless it was real short or could be real sloppy.

If you have a Griz 4003G lathe its B 7 and engage half nut on 1 or 3.
I also am having withdrawls from not being able to get on benchrest.com.

I have the quick change gearbox on the proper settings. The thing doesn't pick up the previous cut. Somebody else had a similar problem and it turned out that his machine had the wrong gear on the thread dial. I have cut 20, 24 and 16 TPI threads with no problem but the 13 won't do right.

I was wanting to make an arbor to thread into my 40x bolt to lap the lugs before I attached the bolt handle. I wanted to lap the receiver more than just the travel of the bolt handle. It seems to me that doing with the bolt handle would leave a ridge where the lug stops when the bolt handle hits home.

I faked the arbor :)

Ray Jay, on just about any lathe, odd number threads have to be caught on a specific spot on the chaser dial, on most of our lathes it is generally the same number, or letter, or the one opposite. It will say on the dial somewhere.
On even threads, you can generally catch any number or letter.
With half threads, you have to catch the same exact number or letter each time.
I doubt there is a wrong part on your machine, just try catching the same number on your dial each time, and it will probably be just fine.
On most lathes that have an American Lead Screw, but also have a Metric Mode, if you cut Metric, you cannot ever diS-engage the half nut, you have quickly stop and then reverse the machine to bring the tool back for the next cut.
Incidentally, we have a 20 inch Daewoo that we bought back in the '80's, and it will not cut an 11 1/2 tpi, which is the common small pipe thread world wide.........jackie.

BRC is back up and I just checked that thread and the guy was having this exact same issue. Turns out the thread dial had the wrong gear. His [ and mine ] have a 15t gear and we need a 16t gear. I wonder why it still cuts good threads on everything but 13tpi ??

I will call Grizzly tomorrow.
