bench shooting

been shooting my savage 10t in 6.5cm, question i have is on the hold, trying to figure what shooters here find the best hold for accuracy, my buddy shoots the same rifle in the same caliber, he shoots it free recoil and gets decent groups at 200yds, i cannot get the same results shooting it free recoil, if i get a solid grip on the gun pushing it up against the stop i cut my groups in half, maybe some shooters can chime in on their best hold that they get consistent results.

What type of front rest, rear bag and stock ? What are you considering decent groups ?

My model 12BVSS in original stock with a EABCO 6.5 CM accuracy barrel behaves the same. I'm using a Caldwell Rock front rest with caldwell rear bag half filled with lead shot. Pull it into my shoulder with two hands and it shoots half minute groups. Anything less and it opens up to minute and a half. It's getting frustrating.

For light rifles, like the Tikka T3 Lite and Rem Model 7, I never could shoot them to their full capability using "free recoil" off the bench. I use a firm hold on the forearm with the rifle stock supported between a front and rear bag.

For heavy varmint rifles I can shoot them well using free recoil but prefer the forearm hold for these also since I can control them better.

I should add that I'm not a bench shooter. The only time I shoot off the bench is when I'm load testing or during the initial sight in of a scope. All other times I shoot off shooting sticks.
