Been offered 6.5/06, need help please!

I do not have much knowledge of this cartridge and have been offered a very good deal on the following rifle. Any comment or observations would be appreciated. I have a 6.5 X 55 Swede as a hunting rig and a 6.5 X 284 in a heavy varmint BR rig. How does or would it compare to the other two cartridges.

The rifle is a 6.5-06 built on an Enfield P17 action, Timney trigger tuned to be 1.5 lbs pull, converted to cock on opening with a speedlock, will push feed as well as from the mag), Boyds laminate thumbhole varminter stock, 26" Bevan King match barrel with a 8.5 twist, Muzzle brake installed properly and true, one piece weaver base shimmed for more elevation.

Thank you

The 6.5-06 has about the same internal capacity as your 6.5X284, and a bit MORE than your 6.5X55.

If the price is right it will make a good shooter for you.

Use 270 brass necked down, and you will have lots of neck length to play with.
H-4831 is the powder of choice around here...

Oops,
I really meant to say that the 6.5 X 55 has LESS internal capicity than the 6.5X06...The 6.5-284 and the 6.5-06 are still about the same.
Sorry about that .

Be careful about using 270 Win brass. A true 6.5-06 is too short to chamber necked down 270 Win brass without trimming it to length. A 6.5-270 Win chamber can accept 06 length brass though. The 6.5-270 Win is known as the 6.5x64 Brenneke in Europe and is a CIP registered cartridge.

I have an 8twist "improved" version and the 140gr class of pills really shines in this chambering. RL22 and H4831sc have been the best for me so far. I necked up from 25-06 brass because the reamer was a tad tighter than normal in the neck. At around 2950-3050fps you will find a very acceptable harmonic without overworking the brass. Mine is a 26" tube, so keep that in mind if your tube is longer/shorter.

carefully check, chamber cast ) the neck diameter, some 6.5/06 are 0.300 neck diameter, to allow 30.06 neck down without neck turning ) some are 0.296 to use 270 win case neck down and trim to lenght some other are tighter

so BEFORE to shoot check your neck diameter for safety purpose

Good shooting
