What is basic opinon of the use of bedding under the barrel in front of the action. Will a rifle shoot more consisent with or without.

I have never cared for any bedding under the barrel, and all my rifles shoot OK like that, even my light weight sporter barrel have no bedding under the barrel at all, and they shoot just fine.
Seems to me that if the barrel is not touching anything but air, it won't have any stress on it......
Then again, some folks insist that bedding the barrel too, will help...

I've owned several of each, I can't see any difference in accuracy using either method. But I no longer bed the barrel just in front of the recoil lug because most of the rifles I own now are switch barrel rigs. I leave the area beyond the recoil lug unbedded that allows me switch barrels and not need to worry about using a heavier barrel with different diameter or contour.

I prefer my barrels to be completely free floated also. I've never owned one that had that part of the barrel bedded, and I've no desire to try it. Completely free floating my barrel has worked very well for me and don't change without a reason. Now if they quite shooting tomorrow and I believe that will fix them I'll bed it in a minute.

My rule of thumb is if the barrel is an MTU contour or bigger, I bed in front of the lug 1-2 inches. Just my .02
