Bedding What work better ????

I was wanting to know what works better then the other ? Bedding the Action ? Or Bedding the Barrel ? OR Both ?. I am thinking about bedding my 22-243 Mauser 98. Would like to know from several of you guys that have bedded rifles...Thanks a lot..OH YA...OR a FREE Floating the barrel with action bedded ?

I bed the action and free float the barrel. I use Devcon as the bedding compound. Seems to work good for me. Brian Brown.

I prefer to bed the action and free float the barrel. You can always experiment with a pressure pad at varying distances under the barrel if your forestock extends out far enough. Some rifles respond well to a pressure pad. Most people use pieces of inner tube rubber.

I agree with those above. Personally I also add pillars, if for no other reason to prevent crushing the stock when tightening action screws (though no one should be tightening them that tight anyway!). The Mauser 98 front action screw has built in pillars by virtue of the boss' on both the recoil lug and bottom metal. A bit of bedding in between these makes sure they are in full contact. The rear action screw can accomadate a pillar or ferrule. In addition, one can tune the barreled action for optimum accuracy and pillars allow for more precise repeatability in torque settings.
My $.02.

I agree with watercam about the pillars. I should have been more clear about bedding the action. When I say bed the action I'm talking about pillar and glass bedding. Brian Brown.

On hunting rifles, which I would assume this is, I also bed under the chamber of the barrel. It gives a little more support for the barrel. I've done it both ways and can't see a difference on my rifles. As previously stated, make sure that there is contact on the front pillars. Most need to be bedded & also bed the floorplate.
