Bedding question

Im about to build a 284 on a 700 SA for long range BR shooting. I have a 1.250 31” long no taper barrel that I’m going to use. I have had several rifles built by a local Smith that does ALOT of BR rifles. He has always bedded the action and about the first 2” under the chamber. Everyone has always talked about how well their rigs shoot after he builds them and I have had the same experience. I have been reading on bedding and it seems most ppl think anything in front of the recoil lug is bad. I’m thinking of bedding this one myself and was wondering how you all do it? Bed the first 1 or 2 inches or no?

I have done it both ways with 30" barrels. Never noticed any difference either way. Matter of fact, I had 2 rifles that were bedded all the way to the fore end and they both shot great. The feeling most everywhere is now...Nothing in front of the lug. Do what you want. You can always dig it out.

If you bed it in front of the action you have to re-do it with every barrel change. On actions with magazine cutouts and a huge barrel putting a spot in front of the lug helps support the barrel a bit

A 31" 1.250 straight barrel is a lot of weight to support from a Remington action. A barrel block is often used with such large barrels. I agree with the premise that it you bed under the barrel you can always clearance it later if it doesn't shoot. I almost never bed forward of the recoil lug, but your situation is different.

Even with a sleeve you still got a 1/4" bolt in the back holding on for dear life. Hold a 30" pipe straight out in front of you then shorten it up to 28". Youll feel like its 100lbs lighter
