Bedding gel or regular epoxy

What should I use gel or regular epoxy to glass bed my new walnut stock 6mmBR LV. Thanks to all that reply.

Regards,

Robert

Most epoxies will work OK. The difference between the two is whether you need a thick consistancy or not. In a wood stock, I would hope you are using pillars, if it's gonna be bolted in. The old original Acraglass was quite runny, and you had to add flox to thicken it. It would crawl into places you didn't want if you weren't careful. Today, we have many good expoxies that are thick, or you can adjust the consistancy to suit. For the initial bedding, you would probably want a thick mix. Once that is done and cured, a thinner application will flow better and fill in nicely for a good job.

Personally I wouldn't use acraglass on anything but that is just my .02 and it's worth about that. Acraglass is just a resin and really has no strength characteristic and it is extremely brittle. I use 3M 8115 in the shop and I like it a lot. It is the same pysical characteristics as Marine Tex but comes in tubes that put out the correct ratio so your not guessing that 10:1 MT ratio. It also has a bit higher shear strength which is why I like it for glue ins.

I always use Accu-Glas gel for all my bedding chores, with never a problem.
On the real heavy weight calibers I use a stainless steel powder to toughen it up a little.
It's not needed for anything else with a light recoil.
When they are finished I set them aside for a few days and then rebed them again with just a very little skin coat, and I always use pillars.

I have always been a huge fan of Devcon Alum Epoxy.

I do a three stage process for all bedding jobs.

I use the Type "F",Alum Puddy) for the first two stages, bedding the pillars 1st, then the action in the 2nd stage.

For the third stage, after cleaning up all the edges and reliefs, I paint a thin coat of the the Type "F-2",Liquid Alum) onto the roughed up bedding, and re-assemble.

According to Devcon, the F-2 shrinks less than 1%, with a little practice, you get a mirror finish and perfect fit.

I have never had one move, crack or break. Pretty fool proof system.

Made the mistake one time and tried their Titanium Epoxy, big mistake. If you let it cure too long, you can't trim out the overflows, LOL....... Won't be doing that again..... I distroyed more cutters than the entire gun was worth, just trying to clean it up....... LOL

i Also use Devon FasMetal 10 HVAC 19770. High strength aluminum filled epoxy.
I have just bedded my Anschutz first i had 2 3/4" pillars made knurled and fitted up to the action prepared the stock to suit coated the holes and the pillars with devcon and sat into place with a layer of cardboard under the action and thinner stuff around the barrel to make sure it was spaced correctly and clamped into place till dry this takes 2 hrs then i removed the action and left overnight.
Next morning i prepared the action with release agent mixed up more devcon set the action in place on the devcon and pulled down tight on the pillars.
I left this cure for approx 1 hr till the leftover devcon had firmed i then removed the action and trimmed any overflow reassembled and let harden leaves you with a perfect fit.
If you are worried about it releasing you can use thin baking paper for the first fitting it will leave wrinkles here and there but are easily filled for the final fit. If you fit the baking paper to the action and lower in holding the paper you can achieve a very nice fit making sure it is also on the pillars then when you remove when the devcon has firmed all will sit together perfectly.
Hope this helps.

What rams-h00ter, ;) ) said...only I do one step.

IMO, more than one step is a VERY easy way to add stress to the bedding. Ramsh00ter must be gooood :D

Chuck, actually, this might help for now. Next time I bed something myself I'll take pics and see what i can do.

I DO have pics for base bedding, just need to actually sit down and write!

Robert,

Richard Franklin prepared an article about "Stress-Free Pillar Bedding". It is photo illustrated. I think you'll find it useful.
