Bedding a stock that already has pillars.

When bedding a stock that already has pillars do you tighten the action screws so the action makes contact with the pillars while curing? If so just snug or actually torque them, It is a manners stock with factory installed pillars. Thanks

I would not put any torque on them at all. For curing, I would run the action screws in until I first begin to feel the slightest pressure, then back them off enough to ensure that no stress is being applied to the action. Then let the bedding cure while clamped upside down by the barrel in a vise. I just wouldn't trust factory installed pillars to be set perfectly to my action. Applying any torque or pressure to the action screws before the bedding cures seems like a good way to stress the action if those factory installed pillars are not dead nuts perfect.

I would do what Alex said but i would use a counter bore and lower the pillars so it will not touch the action ruff up the bedding and re bed. I found some makes of straws fit over the guide screws and will take up the clearance that was made for the screws…… jim
