bedding a savage

Hello all, a friend of mine wants me to bed his savage for him but it has a factory plastic stock. Can I bed this stock, is it even worth it? I cant get him to buy a different stock so here I am with a dilemma. Thanks, SPM

I have one of those stocks, and I wouldn't even attempt to bed it. I don't see anything to bed to.

Just my opinion, worth exactly what you paid for it.

it is not worth the time or effort

but if you rough up the stock epoxies will adhere to it.

If he's absolutely dead set on keeping the stock, then bedding couldn't hurt anything. The forearms on the factory stocks are pretty flimsy. I had an Edge in .223 that I filled in the hollowed out area with putty epoxy. It ended up making the whole stock feel stiffer, and kept the fore end from flexing up against the barrel when on a bipod or rest. Improved group size a lil to boot.

Yeah, there'd be no better stock to learn on than a cheap factory one. I can also understand just wanting to do the best with what ya got. I'm usually pretty cheap (read, broke).

Have bedded a few of the factory Savage plastic stocks.

Scuff the plastic AND....drill 1/8" holes randomly along the edges (where thick enough) so the epoxy has something to grab on to.

Also, buy a piece of U channel aluminum and bed into the forearm to stiffen it up so you can use a bipod and/or sling. Once you do this, they actually work well.
