bedding a savage 16 question

I'm attemting my first bedding job on my .300 WSM Savage model 16. I have the whole action stripped down except for removing the magazine out of the action. I've been prying on the front and rear, but don't want to break it. Any tips? I afraid if I try to bed it and leave it in, it will get stuck.

You're going to need to remove it and fill the magwell with something. I have heard people using papertowels topped with playdoh or modeling clay...

Is this a centerfeed or staggered feed action? Are you trying to remove the mag from the action, or is the mag in the stock?

Watch out for thoses recessed grooves on the barrel nut. I know a guy who once did his first Savage and totally overlooked those wrench grooves thinking that the release agent was all he needed and cracked a stock when he tried to remove. By the way i wont say who he is ;D ;D ;D

Don't bend the box, and be careful because you can break the tabs off of the action improperly removing the box. Use something to fill the space between the magazine and the recoil lug, then take a big screw driver and push against the magazine box, using the spacer for leverage. The box will pop right out.
Fill your Magazine cavity in your stock with plumbers putty. Grind away material in the stock for the bedding material. Float the tang using 1-2 layers of tape. I then follow Richard Franklin's method of bedding and that works great.

I would never again use play dough I did and all the salt in it was not a good thing. I had lots around and thought it would be a good use of it but was sorry I did.

I know you said you got it out but for others, take a large flat blade screw driver and at a slight angle at the rear(trigger side) of the mag put the blade on the tab and give a rap towards the mag,it should pop right out. To replace just do the same in reverse.
When you bed stop at the recoil lug don't bed the nut and do not bed the tang let it float. Use plenty of release agent.

Why not bed the nut? I have it already to go for tonight right up to the front of the nut. A lot of sites say go 1 1/2" past the nut to where the taper starts.

All my savages are bedded 2 inches past the end of the nut. I wrap two layers of tape around the nut and tang. I want the nut and the tang to float. I stop the bedding at the flat behind the rear action screw. Use some old barrels to make pillars and your good to go. After you remove the trigger and mag your bedding a round tube so its not to bad. Matt
