bearing surface

It's not important to me. The longer a bullet gets the more the bearing surface. VLD's and Boattails will have less bearing surface than the same weight flat base spizer.

I use VLD's and Boattails for target shooting and flat base spizer for hunting. all work perfictly well.
 
I haven't asked everyone, but the long range match shooters I know best measure bearing surface, and shoot score targets with bullets with similar bearing surface.

I just measured 100 Sierra 6.5mm 142 g. matchkings and found a deviation in length of all of .003". With a total bearing surface length of .472" that works out to 0.6 % difference. For less than 1% I stopped worrying about it. I have bigger issues with my shooting than that! How about getting more consistent velocity for starters. Then there's my hold at 1000 yds.. Could be better. And then...
