Bearing surface measurement tools

Would like an evaluation by those using this method to sort bullets including the manufacturer of the tool and your experience with it.
Thanks

I went thru several different tools and set ups and after much study I bought the John Buhay Bearing surface comparator. Absolutely the best tool i own and once you get the hang of it you can sort bullets by bearing surface very quickly. I use it for sorting all my LR bullets and it pays for itself as far as one less mental "obstacle" ;D . Flyers were eliminated in my groups and tool is worth every penny. Tubbs makes one as does Shehane and they are pretty similar. You have to buy the insert and bottom base for each extra caliber and i ended up buying .22 cal. 6MM, 6.5MM and 30 cal.

I just got into shooting groundhog matches at 200 300 and 400 yards. Do you think it is worth while to sort at these distances?

How do you contact John Buhay? I am unable to find a contact for him. About what did the tool and inserts cost? Daid Tubb used to sell one but he has discontinued it, stlill has inserts for sale on his superiorshootingsystems site.
Thanks

Depends on the accuracy of your current load and target size. Tell me about groundhog matches, souns like a fun shoot

It may not be a must to sort for those distances, but it can't hurt. IMHO sorting helps immensely for distances over 400 yards.

Mark King Rifles out of Pa. has them in stock and he sells them for Buhay. 717-834-6284. You get the tool along with one cal. size inserts for 150, each caliber after that insert wise is 50 dollars. A very beefy well made tool.

Frank,
After a year after talking to you about the Buhay I called Mark and visited with him for about 10 minutes, what a nice guy to talk to,...ordered the tool, impatiently waiting :D, Give him a call Bill even if you don't buy the tool the visit will be worth the call.
Wayne.

Wayne, i had to dig out my receipt to get phone # etc. and it was a year ago almost to day I bought it. :) Mark does like to talk about shooting and he is indeed a super fellow. Hoping to meet him and some of the boys at Williamsport this summer.

Talked with Mark King and he is sending one my way. He is a very nice person to do business with.
Says they are really selling, so the word must be out.
Thanks again for the info. This site is worth its weight in gold.

Would this be used in place of a Simclair Bullet Sorting Stand with Dial Indicator?

The Sinclair, as purchased, measures bullet base to ogive. On a flat base bullet, this would be measuring bearing surface. On a boat tail bullet, it would be measuring base to ogive. You can make a caliber specific reamed cylinder to attach to the indicator stem and have the same caliber specific base to turn the Sinclair unit into a bearing surface comparator. I did this by drilling/reaming a Sinclair comparator base (the type designed to clamp to the blade of a caliper) to fit the stem of the indicator on my Sinclair sorting stand. It now measures bearing surface.

I might have to give this a try.
