BCSC sight in weekend

Every year Becker County Sportsman’s Club offers a sight in weekend for deer hunters wanting to check their old rifles and to sight in new rifles. I have volunteered as a RO for several years now and it has become my favorite activity.
For $5 a gun donation the rifle committee members offer experienced coaching, targets and support to get hunters on target before the opener.
My favorite experience is helping a new hunter (usually a kid but not always) to get confidant in their abilities with their tools. I was impressed with the number of families that showed up and how careful everyone was. With a very few safety exceptions (usually older salty types ) everything went without a hitch. Most of the problems involved; wrong ammo, damaged optics or broken parts, but we were able to direct fixes to everything I encountered. It’s a good fundraiser for the club and If you like hunting - share your experience with new hunters, it’s hugely satisfying!

Helping others at the range can be rewarding.
I was at my local range today doing some load work, and banging steel.
A elderly gentleman on the bench to my left was shooting a new m1 with Sig Optics.
He asked me for a hand as he couldn't figure out why he wasn't on target.
Using my scope to analyze his target I quickly saw he was hitting high and right.
I made a couple quick adjustments to his scope explaining what I was doing and what the results would be.
Had him shoot agian at a fresh target, he put 2 shots at 2 o'clock right on the line of the 10 ring! 2 more clicks left I told him, letting him make the adjustment this time.
Well the ol boy commenced to pounding the center out of his target.
He was grinning ear to ear as he thanked me.

My experience exactly, and a few youngsters also!

I was at a public range this summer and a young man was shooting a home-made rifle next to me. He was in a local gunsmith school (remind me not to look for a smith near here) and his rifle was the dang ugliest thing I ever saw...in 350 Rem Mag of all things. He couldn't find paper at 50 yards. He was earnest and teachable though.

I asked him if I could help. He allowed me to put his rifle on my rest. I dropped his bolt out, eyeballed the bull thru the barrel, moved his scope till it appeared to be close and fired a round. It was on paper. I then rested the rifle again, adjusted the scope to the hole and then fired another round. It was within an inch of the hole. One more round and it was sighted in at 50 yards.

He was slack jawed. He had fired close to 15 rounds and didn't have paper yet. I explained to him what I had done and I could see lights coming on. He was thrilled and went on shooting then moved to 100. When I left he had it zeroed at 100 yards. I felt good about helping him. I just hope that he never gets his hands on a valuable gun, given his "skills" with what appeared to be a band-sawed triangle shaped barrel...
