I had been seeing a few posts on FB about the BCA 17 HMR uppers in the last few months and I watched a couple videos on Youtube about them recently. Check out a few of the videos for yourself if you get a chance. I decided I HAD to try one for myself.
I purchased the 20" SS version from BCA earlier in the week and it was delivered today just after lunch. I unboxed it and cleaned the barrel real good with a brush and patches. The BCG seemed well oiled, but not knowing what the oil was, I cleaned it and reoiled with Slip 2000 gun lube. I love that stuff. I am using a RRA lower for now, but I think I will buy a dedicated lower for this upper soon. For those that don't know, BCA sends the proper buffer and buffer spring with the upper to put in your lower.
I mounted the scope, a Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16x42 that I had in the gun safe left over from a previous scope upgrade I did on another rifle. I bore sighted it the old fashioned way and loaded up the range bag with ammo and bags and went out to my private little range I have on family ground.
My first 10 shots were from 50 yards off of the hood of my truck. See pic. It ran well, ejected well, and shot well. I then went to my shooting bench I have @ 100 yards and got some steadier shots in and was VERY impressed with how well it shot with the Hornady 17gr V-Max ammo I was using. See pic.
I then loaded up both of the 10 round magazines I bought and did a fairly controlled round of shots from both magazines at some steel targets I have set up. No issues at all so far. I then loaded up both mags again and did a mag dump on both shooting as fast as I could at the steel targets. Still ZERO issues. The upper ran well, ejected well and shot GREAT! I literally giggled a little at that point as I was beyond impressed with this thing.
I ended up shooting a total of 75 rounds through the upper today and had no misfires, no ejection failures, stovepipes or any issues at all. BCA knocked this one out of the ball park as far as I'm concerned. I also included a pic of some of the random brass I picked up to see how the brass looked after firing. A couple seemed a little bit "puffed", but nothing real bad. No cracked necks or anything obviously wrong with the brass being fired brass. Best money I've spent a while IMO
