Batt actions

I have an RS and SV model. Neither required recoil lugs.
They were pillered & bedded, not glued in) without issue.
Same also with my A-bolt action, and there isn't a need in my T2Ks design.
I'll never have a recoil lug

My SV and 3 lug both have Holland lugs on them but the barrels are 1.350 and 28 inches long. The lugs help out with carrying the weight of those truck axle barrels better than the actions alone.
They also both have flats milled into them that will keep them from rolling or moving in the bedded stock if you dont use a recoil lug, so if your not using extremely heavy barrels don't worry about it.......

What sustains the recoil or how does the action stay put without a recoil lug to keep it from moving?

BAT actions as well as most custom BR actions, have a small cutout on the bottom of the action as well as a thick rear tang that act as recoil surfaces. I think it really depends on caliber as well as barrel weight and length, when deciding on a lug. A big boomer or very heavy barrel will require the use of a lug, but the low recoilers do not. Most short range guns are glued into the stock and don't even have screws holding the action in place. Go to a short range BR match and count all the rifles with recoil lugs. Zero will be the number you come up with. At a long range match on the other hand, it'll be a different story.

At the very top of this page is one of my SV actions. You can see a relieved area on the underside which provides enough area. If your barrel's really heavy, you can bed it for the first couple inches,or more).
