BAT vs BARNARD

I am looking at building a new long range setup in something like a 30-338 lapua . Is there really any performance differences between these 2 actions or is one as good as the next?
thanks in advance for any and all input.....

The Barnard is a large, stout, three lug action. I don't know that there would be any accuracy difference between it and a BAT. The BAT is certainly the nicer looking of the two.

For the price, you cannot beat the Barnard as it comes with a decent trigger as well.

A friend has a BAT based rifle similar to what you are building. It is a switch barrel. One is a .338 Lapua with a 37 degree shoulder. The other is the same case only in .30 caliber. The .30 is OK, but the .338 seems to be much more accurate. He has a real, well measured, .221 five shot group with this... Lilja barrels.

Swing the bolt & break the trigger on a Barnard P-O2 action & you will not want an action that utilizes a Remington pattern trigger group ever again.
Bolt Timing,Firing Pin Timing,Lock Time,True/Squareness,ground finish,Simplicity, adjustable bolt stop,Single/Two Stage Trigger group out of the box makes all others second to a Barnard P-O2 Action.

Hi there! i had the exactly the same delema about 6 months ago!
both bat and barnard are great actions. if you get a barnard youll probly have to get the larger PM model to handle the longer .30-338. the good things about the barnard are the great trigger that comes included and being hardened and then surface ground high-lights the time and quality put into their actions. you can also have them nickel plated from factory for a little extra. the barnard has a very well thought out design from an engineering point of view. the only real downside to the barnard are that they arnt made of long wearing, surface finish) stainless and dependig on your taste they dont look as nice sitting in a BR style stock with a big scope on top. verrrry trivial!! ive opted to go for a BAT model M 8.5" x 1.55" round in s/s. mainly because that action has a 3&3/8" port for longer rounds and being s/s it should still be looking great in 20yrs time. BAT also have an excellent reputation and a lot of options with scope bases and rings. being s/s is a bit of a double edged sword. if you dont clean and grease the locking lugs occasionaly they could gall. ive spent hours tearing my hair out over the same question and looking at models from both companys so if you have any more questions put em out there mate!

The BAT SV action in my brother's build is awesome. There is NO play in the bolt and all the surfaces are machined very nice. I was not used to a bolt being so tight in an action. When you opperate the bolt on the BAT you need to pull the bolt straight back or it will not open. Again, I am used to Remington, Sako, and Savage actions. There is no comparison. Even the Lawton action on a friends 408 was not as tight. They feel like glass sliding on wet glass when opperated! The only thing I don't like on them is the small bolt knob. However that can be easily fixed.

With the new price increase in the Barnard's, their not as attractive as they used to be. BAT makes great actions,I have a 3-Lug). At the moment, with a BAT your pretty much committed to a Jewell trigger. That's really not a problem for most, but I like a two-stage. There MAY BE a great two-stage out for a BAT at the end of the year.

Both are great actions that will serve you well.

I can get the barnard for about $600 less where I live.Since the opinion is that they are both great actions I will go with the barnard.
Thanks for all the input....much appreciated....

Bat will machine your action to accept an Anschutz two stage match trigger. My shooting friend has this done on his BAT and it is exceptional.

Well, I had a chance to handle the Barnard action last week and placed my order from Ian Roberston of Robertson Composites, gun stocks). That seems to be a very good action and I think Ian makes the best synthetic stocks I have ever seen. Ian was very helpful and I asked him to arrange the entire build.I changed my mind on the caliber though and decided to go with a 7mm wsm . Now I am going to need to pick some brains in the reloading forum...
thanks again fellas for the input...
