BAT 3-lug action for short range?

I have no personal experience with one, I use a B and a DS. I have "heard" that you upset the gun in the bags when working the bolt (true or not?). I'm thinking about one but like I said no personal experience, better than the B or DS? Not as good? Upset the gun? Help an old man out here, would like to hear from guys that use them.
TIA

the 3-lug was designed to limit the bolt throw to 60 degrees. The rationale was that the decreased bolt arc would speed up things for runners and would cause less disruption in the bags. Even a roller bearing on the cocking piece was used to "smooth things out".
I owned two, and sold them both. In my opinion the third lug and the increased contact from the much bigger bolt body never allowed easy and smooth operation....just too much friction. I will take a two lug B, MB or DS any day.

That is kind of what I've heard, didn't turn out to be what they expected?!

I have not had a problem upsetting the rifle with my 3L. I think a lots has to do with how the rifle is set up in the bags, how your brass is prepped and how you handle the rifle. All of this is effected by the type of stock you are using also.

Hobo oil on your bolt makes a big difference. That’s any bolt.

Seems like that would create a slip/trip hazard. Always maintain three points of contact ;)

I think I read in Tony Boyer's book that he had a preference for the 3 lug actions?????
I have never met Tony, maybe someone in the know can set me straight?

I have 5 3 Lug Bats Frankie. My newest one was one that Tony Boyer sold me that Dwight Scott built for him. He never used it in a match but he practiced with it. It is not his usual RBRPRE, It's a RBLPRE. I really like the 3 lug considering I have 10 other 2 lug Bats. I would suggest that if you buy a 3 Lug, get a melonited action and bolt. This makes cycling the bolt slicker than owl shit so to speak. Without it the bolt is a little stiff. Wayne France from VA has been using one for years and he loves his and It has won him many matches. I would recommend it only if melonited.

Lester Bruno just won the Cactus Classic, I'm pretty sure with a 3L.
I have a couple that I use. I've had one on a rail gun as well.
They can be a little stiff, but properly lubed they can run without disturbing the rifle in the bags.

Thank you, I really need to find someone with one and work that bolt!

I have an old (two digit serial number) 3LL that was tight and could get persnickety in windy dirty conditions.
I sent it to @Alex Wheeler to have a look to see if this could be resolved along with timing it to the trigger. Presto Change-O, it is now fast and doesn't appear to have any ornery days any more.

Short range isn't as fast of a shooting game. I wouldn't think it would cause any problems.

I have one on my railgun and a couple lv guns. I will say the CM blued ones are smoother and out of the large crowd i know that use them they have no issues at all. They are lots faster and the huge bolt raceway makes them load easier. As you know nobody shoots faster than short range shooters- there wouldnt be any 3 lugs if they werent fast. Im even putting one on a sweet new stock i got from a cool guy.

Hey, I want to see it when finished!!
