Basic .22 Rimfire Target Rifle for kids (2)

Grandpa Bear

Retired USN WTC and VBAPD
Looking for opinions, please stay within these guidelines:
(1) We are buying two (2) rifles for Christmas gifts, one for boy and one for girl.
(2) We are limited to $1,200 total for both guns and reasonable sights.
(3) We would prefer current production BOLT action rifles.
(4) Peep sights preferred.
(5) Removable magazine(s). (one reason for current production rifles, magazine availability)
(6) Both Grandchildren are beginners, these rifles will help us decide if future rifles will be Izmash or higher class rifles.

Thanks for your help and your opinions.

If you are speaking of true target rifle 22s, not plinking 22s then search gunsamerica, gunbroker, etc., for Anschutz target rifles based on the 64 actions, they should be able to be found within your budget guidelines. Another place to check is MTGUNS, they specialize in target 22s and often have some available at reasonable prices.

CZ's or Savage's should keep @ about + or - $600 per/including peeps (depending on brand). The CZ trainer is a wonderfully accurate little rifle. and the Savage 93 isn't too bad either for the price (we use a few Savages for our FAS classes),but the quality of the CZ is much better.

Not sure exactly if your talking standard or heavy barrel but if it is heavy barrel I just bought myself a Savage Mark II BV for $350.00 Cdn plus a scope of choice. Love the rifle as it seems to be as accurate as an Anshutz just haven't got a 2oz trigger pull. Anshutz 64 Sporter will cost you in $1600 range each plus scope of choice. Other than the Savage heavy barrel is the CZ's in my opinion. For the price and accuracy I just couldn't turn down the Savage

The only one I know that fits your criteria is the Savage Mark 2 FVT. Has the Lyman peep sights, has magazines and is ~$400.

I would look for 2 good used Anschutz 64s/Savage-Anschutz 10 series. The CZs are good rifles as well. I may get blasted for posting this, but I have owned 2 Marlin 2000s over the years and they both shot great. The only reason I sold the. Is because I had JR shooters buy them from me. Used, with sights they are going for 315-400+ depending on the stock and the condition. For the money, they are a pretty decent entry level 3-p gun. I know of a local shop that has one right now for 315. If you are interested, let me know and I'll go check it out for you.

I love the old mil-trainers. I picked up a Mossberg 144LSB. Great rifle. Parts are still available from Numrich if you need them. New, I'd be hard pressed to not choose a ruger 10/22, but for the lack of peep sights for which you could install.

++1 for the CZ!! DAD bought me a 452 American when I was 14 and it shot vary well! Sold it and bought me a 452 silhouette and it is LIGHTS OUT!

CZ is hard to beat. I own five CZs and all are great shooters. I own one Anschutz 1907 in a bench stock and it will out shoot all of the CZs. But it is a 2100.00 rifle. CZS are the best rifle for the money.
