Base layers

I have an Under Armor base layer 4.0 shirt that I've used for many years and I think it's the best money I've ever invested in that kind of thing. But I need something new and the new UA 4.0 base layer undershirt is getting poor reviews. Uuiu has some wool undershirts but only good for 32* to 40*. Anybody have any suggestions for anything similar to Under Armor or just a good base layer?

Sitting 20 feet up at 20 degrees with my 15 year old UA Cold Gear base layer right now. Don’t need it that often but when I do it is the toastiest base layer I have.

If I am going to be moving around. Sitka base layer is awesome for wicking sweat.

Hands down the best base layer I own and goes on just about every hunt with me is the Sitka Fanatic Hoody. I wear it alone during chilly bow hunts and as a base layer for colder hunts. Pockets in the right places, hood that fits tight with a built in face mask. I really love the Sitka clothing and they wear great and last forever. I’m also really liking the Kuiu clothes I have, especially their Pro Brush Pants with suspenders.

Plus one on the Hoody. I have not been able to find the Sitka base layer bottom that is as good as this hoodie.

I have a couple base layers that I use as the conditions warrant. A light or midweight merino wool is my go-to and if I had to pick one.. I really like the KUIU merino. Wicks moisture well and far exceeds my expectations for not retaining body oder. I'm a hunter that spends time in the blind, but I also put on some miles depending on the hunt. Temp range 20-40*

For synthetic, I tried the KUIU pelaton and didn't care for it. Fit wasn't all that comfortable and it doesn't breath nearly as well as the merino. I too have one of the old Under Armour cold gear pieces (it's gotta be close to 20 years old) and it works great. Loose fit, breaths and retains heat when needed.

My midweight set came from Cabela's (4-5 years ago) and I've been very pleased. It retains heat well.. but I can sweat easily if the temps aren't low or I do a lot of movement. When I know I'll be sitting most of the time and the temps are low this set has been great.

I am planning to try out some more of the merino base layers from Kuiu.

Black ovis heavy weight merino less expensive than name brands and comes up on sale often I have the hoodie and its my go to base layer under my sitka ws puffy and kuiu yukon rain jacket I stay warm and dry

Look into the SmartWool base layers. I use them for cold weather commuting on my bicycle, one hour each way, in Minnesota. Still riding in December and my bodycore is toasty.

They are not cheap, because they are not cheap.

I own 4-5 of these smartwool quarter zip pullovers and these things seem to last forever. I really like their socks too.
