This rifle is a pre-war M98 Mauser sporter by J.P. Sauer &Son. She is in excellent condition externally but has a coal-chute looking BBL. This shot-out bbl has a raised rib and lots of top quality engraving thus the desire to save the BBL. thanks very much for the replies so far.

This rifle isn't suitable for barrel relining. You would be better off searching for a good take off barrel, They are out there but they are getting harder to find. Or have Pac-Nor create an exact copy of your barrel.

Relining isn't suitable for higher pressure cartridges.
One option would be reboring to a larger caliber. There are still a few guys who will do that.

Have you tried to really clean this 'coal chute' barrel?

'Shot out' is usually reserved for barrels which have been examined in a clean condition where the ravages of time and shooting have had the ill-effect of degrading the lands. Prior to a few years ago most shooters lacked the ability of being able to actually see inside the barrel to make this determination. Now though, with the advent of inexpensive borescopes, everyone can enjoy the heartbreak of being able to observe ill treated bores.

The 'raised rib and lots of engraving' makes finding a replacement nearly impossible. This is why I suggest trying a thorough cleaning first before giving into the need to make drastic changes. But, if your barrel is truly shot out, then I suggest finding a very careful reboring expert to handle this job. Make a phone call to discuss the process and the details of what you will be sending and what your expectations are. Get their ideas about a cartridge which is suitable. Be thorough in your discussion so you are properly prepared to make this decision as there is no going back.

I suggest these avenues since I was in your position a number of years ago. Mauser M98 with a ribbed barrel and engraved. I scrubbed the absolute bejesus out of that barrel until low and behold the lands appeared in decent enough shape to postpone the rebore. It still shoots to this day with careful attention to a reasonable cleaning procedure.

Buddy of mine had a Carcano locked away for years that was a
$23 dollar surplus rifle from the 60's. He cleaned the bore up
somewhat with some of Dave Tubbs fire lapping bullets.

You can re-line a high power barrel providing the liner is a good 4140 barrel and the original barrel is taken out to maximum internal dimensions. In addition, I like to thread the liner piece to fit the receiver. Essentially, what I am really doing is sleeving the liner with the old barrel. The liner is turned to have as much material over the chamber as possible and to carry that thickness as far up the barrel as possible. The last one I did had the original barrel opened up to where the shell was only about .060" thick. High temp Loc-tite works well to put them together, but you want to be damn sure the liner will slip into the sleeve (old barrel) easily before you try to put them together, while not having too much clearance (a couple thou radially). You can use solder, but if the old barrel has a soldered-on rib, that will be a problem too. All in all, it's a labor intensive, time consuming job and you really have to want to do it. WH

I've brought two milsurp sewer pipes back to 2 MOA, with serious scrubbing with a bore brush wrapped with strands of "Frontier 45" scrubby pad material.

I'd for damn sure try that before I went the re-line route. Don't forget that ya might reline the thing and have a 2 MOA shooter-- still. jd

Sir, I took your advise and dedicated myself to cleaning this bbl. I removed 100 years + of accumulation. I have rifling and will shoot reduced loads this coming week. thanks very much.
