Barrell fluting

Does anyone have any info on Barrell fluting,is there any books DVDs on the subject or even pictures of how the barrells are set up for machining.I know basically how its done but Ide like to see some of the fixtures the big guys use.Its something I would have an interest in offering as a service if I got a good feel on fixturing,Im not talking about the spiral fluting that needs CNC equipment to do,just plain straight fluting.

I'm sure there is a lot of knowledge here that you may be able to find what you need. There's many capable people on board

Look at indexing heads. If you have any kind of mill table you can quickly figure out how to do it, when you look at and indexer.,aka) dividing head. You have to remember you are dealing with a taper.

6bits has the right idea. Any toolmaker should be able to set this up anyway with no problem. The only fixture you may need is an indexer, with a riser)although it can be done without one and a support will be needed when you reach the middle of the cut. Personally the horizontal is the way to go, but if a vertical is all you have, you have to go with it

Thanks guys, this is what I was thinking myself.Theres very little problems with heavy barrells but where a lighter barrell is concerned, some middle support is needed incase of any flex in the barrell. Thanks again guys.

Do you want the fluting for looks or other reasons?

For the best accuracy the fluting should be done after the barrel is drilled and before the barrel is rifled.

Barrels that are fluted properly and stress relieved properly shoot very well.

Fluted barrels done incorrectly will have induced stress and never shoot well.

Thats an interesting point and one that Ive only just come to realise yesterday when I was browsing on the Lilja website.Maybe something to stay clear of.
