Barrel Vise by 21st Century

I purchased this vise and plan to remove and reinstall a barrel or two with it. I am wondering if I should find some thin leather to protect the barrel. I also saw recommendations of business cards, bike inner tube and toilet paper rolls. I would think leather would be the safest but may cause the barrel to slip?

I was looking at this for leather, seems pretty thin.

Business cards work well for me. Most factory barrels are screwed on extremely tight, to say the least. I believe the leather will slip being to thick to begin with. Just my very limited experience talking here. Many times heat will help..

It's aluminum... you don't really need anything. I use one of these almost daily. I've tried leather, drywall tape, business cards, cardboard tube, etc... Just use the vice in my opinion.,

I use a an empty toilet paper roll. It works good. If the barrel slips, I tighten it more.

I use it often and just put the barrel in it with nothing else and it works great on steel barrels. The only problem I've had with it was one of the springs got in the stud hole somehow and I had to get a pry bar to get it out. I just turned the spring upside down and no problems since.

Adding something just changes the friction factor. Anodized aluminum on steel does not produce much friction. Adding a wrap of printer paper will increase the friction.

I have a Viper that looks identical to the one you got. I always used the toilet paper roll when installing barrels and never marked one. Might not anyway, but I just keep a cut tube in the vise when I store it.

Yesterday I am currently rebuilding a Pacific 366 progressive shotshell loading press. Cleaning everything up and checking parts for damage. The final crimp die top nut wouldn't budge. I didn't have much to grab on to, and didn't want to leave any damage to the threads or knurled top ring. Kept applying Kroil for about 24 hours. Thinking about how I could hold it securely. You guessed it, put it in my Viper barrel vise with the toilet paper roll protecting it and the nut broke loose.

Dave, does that mean your shop has a lounge section? ;)
You bet your sweet ass it does. The frig behind the bar died. Need to solve that problem. Has a full bath and bedroom. 16X30 garage bay. All plumbed to finish out into a 3 bedroom, two bath house. Left a big gap in the garage wall so I can move a few things around and pack two vehicles in it when a hurricane blows in. Had a Z06 parked front of the Haas for the first storm.
