Barrel tuner how far onto barrel

This may sound like a dumb question , but here goes. I bought a Harrells barrel tuner to put on the end of a rifle that has a threaded barrel and since it will not go over the thread protector that is on there now, I also got a threaded length of spacer that will have to be sized down to the diameter of the barrel and screw it on first. The old protector is about 1/2" long and the new one is almost an inch so I am assuming that I should shorten it first. The question is whether there is an ideal length for it. If I shorten it to the same length as the original protector which was .520 inch, when I seat the tuner over it, the tuner clamping area will just miss clamping onto both the barrel and the protector, but will grab .720" of the actual rifle barrel. If I leave the protector a little bit longer, the clamping section of the tuner will actually grab both the barrel and a bit of the protector which would likely prevent any possible vibration induced by the protector itself, but won't grab as much of the actual barrel. What do you think?

Dusty is right. You have a rimfire tuner. A centerfire tuner will be threaded on to the barrel. A centerfire gun has too much blast for a clamp on tuner. You might blow it right off the end of the barrel.

Does a barrel tuner really work or is it snake oil? Does it work on a target/varmint profile barrel?

Absolutely and without a doubt. My bud and I were talking recently and in his testing he said in one revolution, he could bring his bbl in and out of tune 4-5 times. It is the same as the BOSS system which a friend of his patented and sold to Browning.

The same has been stated by Grey Fox. I know them both and absolutely believe them. I think there will be a whole lot of "Oh Yeahs" to follow.

You want it on there about an inch to get past the clamping relief cut. Further is better as gunk will get in the gap between the barrel & inner tube. Tuner cleaners do not get this void.

Keith, thanks for the answer but do you mean an inch onto the actual barrel or in total on the barrel plus the thread protector. I was planning on 1.240 inch which is the depth of the tuners recessed area. Plan was to trim the new protector down to allow that, but unsure whether to have the whole area that squeezes down around the barrel or partially on the barrel and part on the thread protector.

You have a unique situation there for sure. I don't have a good answer for you but if I had my druthers I'd want it clamped to one or the other, not both. Having said that, I'd try leaving the thread protector that inch long & that will get you past the clamping recess. You'll just have to take it off periodically & clean the gunk that builds up it that remaining .240. No big deal. That seems the easiest to me.
If that doesn't work, how 'bout cutting the thread off & just clamping it to the barrel? Or is it an heirloom?

Keith

I think I'll call Harrells again and see if he has the solution.
The section that grips is from the numbers to the end. I wondered if that section should grip both the barrel and the thread protector or just the barrel.

That goes on a gauge fit (perfect dia) on a rimfire barrel. You bore the inside to fit your barrel and it should stay on without tightening the screws. A centerfire tuner threads on and is usually .875x32tpi. It needs to be very solid so youd need to cut the current threads off, recrown and thread for the tuner for it to work right

I've made several adapters for different existing barrel threads, say 5/8-28 etc. and I've threaded for my tuner BEHIND existing threads such as those. It still works but I prefer, when possible, to not have that extra joint in the system and to have the muzzle behind the end of the tuner, similar to mine. Both ways will tune a barrel but I prefer not to do them by those methods if given a choice..
