Barrel threading lathe question

My mentor died before I became a journeyman so I'm not sure what my status is vis-à-vis a machinist v. gunsmith, but I can say that if Dave ever caught me threading using the cross-slide straight-in, He'd have thrown something heavy at me or smacked me with something that would have made a nun jealous.

I’ve done it both ways. I prefer to use the compound, but not because it produces better threads. Maybe we need an another test, like the nut barrel issue, with 50 pages of argument preceding it. Cross slide barrels vs. compound barrels!

Another cross slide threader here. Haven’t cut threads with the compound in almost 20 years.

On a humorous note, I think it is much easier to actually take a good shooting rifle, machine a nut, modify the barrel and clearance the stock to clear the nut, and ascertain if lost any of it’s potential than it is to answer that age old question……”which is better, compound or cross slide?:)

Lol!
Another who can pee further contest.

I’ve tried both, I prefer the compound but I’m on a smaller machine.
Do what you prefer and be happy.
Both ways work.

Which you did a wonderful job and yet there are still people who will say that it doesn't matter because people aren't shooting nut barrels at the Nationals hahaha

"I'll be shooting one of them there nut barrels when I see it winning at the Nationals"

Now the nut isn't the same as the other nut so the test isn't valid anyway.

It's like global warming. It's just a political movement it has nothing to do with science. I feel the same way about the nut barrel controversy. There are people that don't care about science they just care about politics.
