Barrel Tenon sizes

Can a Rem.700 takeoff be turned down and rethreaded to fit a mod. 70 Win. ? Or will it be necessary to cut off the existing tenon and cut a new one?

Win Model 70 tenon is typically 1" x 16 TPI and about 0.740" long.

Rem Model 700: tenon threads are 1 1/16” x 16 TPI, with a tenon length of about 0.700”.

As to the practicality of what you want, I'm sure there are machinists who will offer an opinion. My guess is that it can be done.

Take off a sixteenth, and lengthen the tenon 0.040" by turning down the barrel of course. However, how that will affect the chambering is another question. :o

Brute,

Here is an issue that you run into: If you take a Rem threaded tenon which has a major diameter of 1.062" and a minor diameter of approximately .955" (approximately .050"-.054" thread depth per side), you will end up with a new threaded tenon of 1" with a partial thread that is about .045" deep.

I say that this is an "issue", but certainly not a problem, here is why. Anyone who has any experience running a lathe and cutting threads would be able to pick up the existing partial thread on the new tenon diameter if the thread pitch is the same, which they both are in this case. Once the new threads are cut, the tenon can then be cut to the proper length to accommodate the proper clearance to the bolt face and coned bolt nose if it applies (depending on if it is a claw extracted or push feed model 70). It would also require a reamer to set the chamber back to the proper head space for that action as well.

Hope that answered your question,

My first question would be why use a Remington factory barrel that cost less than $75.00 on another rifle. The time and cost of doing the machine work out weighs the benefits.

Plus 1 RWK.

I had a 700 Rem takeoff barrel in 7 Mag that was a shooter, and a M-70 Classic that had a bad bore, but had a B.O.S.S. on it. When the tenon dia. was cut down to 1", only a faint trace of the original 16 tpi Rem thread remained. That trace completely disappeared when the new 16 tpi thread was cut. Set the breech back, coned it, rechambered to 7mmSTW and cut the extractor relief. Installed the B.O.S.S. on the Rem barrel. Made a good shooter for just some labor.
A lot of Rednecks name their rifles...Appropriately, I call this one "Scrap Iron".

Nice! Love the name.
Sorry for the long answer fellas. I just figured since if it was in the gunsmith section, he was looking for some sort of instruction, ya know...

JS, I for on thank you - that is the first time that someone explained that you could salvage the tenon (or least part of it) by re-cutting on the old thread paths. I appreciate you experienced gunsmiths taking the time to educate the rest of us hobbyists.
