Barrel swap for Weatherby Mark v 22 250 6 lug

HI Everyone,

Wanting to know your thoughts and opinions on twist rate for new barrel I’m planning on getting Douglas to install! Thinking on Rem Varmint contour 26”.

Original is 1 in 14” but now thinking 1 in 9”. What are the wight limits for the 1 in 9” twist? Should I use something different?

Thanks for you help always,
Frank

Depending on your needs I would do a 1 in 9”
Shoot all the 68 and 69s and most 75 weight bullets for long targets.Varmint weight bullets like the 53 V-Max will work too, hopefully you have a place to get into some ‘chucks.

I’d go 1:8” twist in order to stabilize the sierra 77gr matchkings or tipped matchkings for better BCs. 1:12” if you’ll only be shooting 53gr V-max or lighter.

My experience has been if you are shooting 55 grain and lighter 12" works. If you are shooting heavies including the new 85.5 8" works. If you shoot light bullets in a 8" twist barrel you will see some bullet failures.

Hornady 75g should stabilise in 9 twist at 22-250 velocities, bit marginal in say, 223.

I think for your intended purpose an 8 twist would be best. I started with 69gr TMKs in my 22-250 moving at a moderate 3200 fps, but found shooting the 80gr Eldm more enjoyable. They hit harder and really move steel better then the 69s, they don't go as fast up close but they hold their velocity better out past 300 yards.

That's the choice I made. Thank you
