Barrel Snakeskin Finish

You should get permission from Speedy Gonzales, he holds a patent on the process.

Assuming he actually does hold an actual, valid patent on the process of using the shipping barrel sleeve to produce a "snakeskin" finish (and I couldn't find one with a quick search on the US Patent Office site, but that doesn't mean much), I wish him good luck enforcing said patent... :-/

-What he said...laughable at the very least.

Maybe Speedy will Chime in. If you want to contact him, he still lives in Trinidad, Colorado, where he is building rifles.

Laughable, you violate a patent, then violate a patent notice, and just see how laughable it is.

I don't think he enforces his patent, but that does not take away from good manners and asking for permission.

I don't fool around with any snakeskin finishes, but if I did, I would not worry much about it. I hardly doubt that anyone of reasonable intelligence would hire a patent attorney the the tune of $450/hr to chase after various and multiple patent infringements all over the place that is hardly enforceable in the first place. If a large gun manufacturer produced thousands of rifles with his "patented technology" he might have a case, but even then, it would be an uphill losing battle. Individuals who perform this action for themselves and do not sell this service are not infringing any patents. I'm sure that there are dozens of folks on this forum who have bead blaster and could do it themselves without fear of violating anything.

Here is the deal. You just like to interject your authoritarian bs because it makes you feel good and stroke your own ego. Sorry, I just call it like I see it. Still waiting for that patent number.......

JS

How can you patent a process that can be done with a bead blaster and a barrel sleeve. Anyone who wastes their time and money getting a patent for this must not have much else to do.
Now if there is in fact a process which he developed using some unique process, than I would also like to see the patent number.

Whose going to finish Speedy's customers' rifles when his new Colorado venture goes kafluey, like happened to his Texas based SGY shop?

For whatevve reason Speedy sold his machines and Moved to Trinidad, NM. He taught gunsmithing there for several years. He was let go and is gunsmithing again. I was under the impression that he settled in Amarillo.

I think that the basis for Speedy's business has always been the outstanding work that he does, and from the pictures that I have seen of his recent projects, that, and the level of technical innovation that they display has not changed. People have various reasons for changing what they do, and while one may speculate, unless I had first hand knowledge, personally, I would find it inappropriate to make comments on a public forum.

What happened there?

Speedy is considered a saint to some, and he may have been a formidable Hunter Class competitor, but a poor businessman. SGY left a nightmare mess for those who sent in actions for builds that were to be done.
Personally I had misdealings with the man on a SGY Robertson stock, and know of others as well.
He was not a very good ambassador to the sport....maybe, he will change.

I don't know any of the circumstances of this situation, but I do know of other similar circumstances where smiths who decide to move in another direction for some reason, don't tidy up the loose ends regarding the guns they are currently holding or any of the promised work in the shop. I would be too afraid to get in some legal trouble, especially when dealing with serialized fireamrs where the ATF is concerned.

If I ever got in that situation, I would just stop taking work and send everything back to the owners and be done. This way, no one could ever accuse me of screwing them out of money or merchandise.

It has been said that if you are going to survive short range you need a mentor. I started 100/200 benchrest last year. After 3 very frustrating months of asking questions of shooters that were setup close to me in the load house, Speedy was the only one to step up and say"Let me see your stuff and we'll see if we can make it better." He has done exactly that. The rest of the people were too busy talking about their stuff and their accomplishments to even give me a clue where to improve. Saint? No. The only one to offer to help? Yep.
