barrel shank

does anyone have a preference for a particular barrel shank?
im making a new action and i will avoid threads on the shank.

If we're talking about rimfire rifles, my 2nd choice is the Anschutz press-fit and cross-pinned tenon. 3rd would be the savage body-fit and cross-pinned, 4th, the Ruger slip-fit and clamped. Somewhere I saw a slip-fit tenon with 2 setscrews. It would tie for 4th place for me.

My 1st choice is a threaded shank, but you ruled that one out.

The new CZ Model 455 rimfire uses the slip fit shank with 2 set screws set at an angle to hold the barrel. I have a 22 LR American and have around 700 rounds through it with no issues. I don't own a second barrel so I have not tried to change one out. Others have and report no issues. I think the system has promise. Should be easy to machine with the right tooling.

but threads dont let a person try to index, and pins mess with bore dimensions.

If you could drill and tap the face of the receiver, say three or more holes, and turn a larger diameter on the shank of the barrel, and make up a ring clamp to hold the barrel flange, you could index it an infinite number of ways. Not sure how the extractor/ejector system would work.

Use a cone breach that way you can index the barrel and head space it pretty easy check out guns of the week and look at the BR-50 and read it also goes into tuners also.

Didn't think of the cone breech. As long as everything was perpendicular and concentric, it would work. The receiver may have to be a bit larger, diameter-wise, to accomodate the bolt circle of the clamp.
