Barrel ?'s

Guys,
If you have a cut rifling barrel. Can you flute and or change the contour without effecting the barrel? I mean can you get a blank then contour and or flute?TIA

It's not recommended. Any time you change the exterior of the barrel after the bore has been finished it will effect the bore. Fluting has less of an effect and does not mess with the bore dimensions of the last inch or so of the barrel, but tapering is a bad idea.

FYI: A number of barrel makers will taper and flute prior to cutting the bore or rifling to prevent any opening of the bore dimensions.

I heard that cut barrels are not effected like button barrels are. I was thinking that the cut barrels would not change like a button barrel will. As long as you keep the barrel cool you should not get stress in the barrel.

If a cut rifled barrel was properly stress relieved, you'll have no problem tapering it or fluting it.

Button, hammer forged or broach cut barrels will never shoot the same once you've done either to them.

I think any barrel is still subject to having the bore open up if recontoured. It really depends on how radical a change you make to the contour. Calfee had a pretty detailed discussion about subtle changes to the bore after he put one of his contours on a rimfire blank. I think it was a Krieger, but I might be mistaken. It was is one of his last "slugging" articles in PS--before he started telling us how to relax.

I guess I don't see what advantage you'd have in buying a blank and then contouring and fluting it after the fact unless you were just looking at it as a fun project to do yourself.

Not so much about stress. Anytime you remove metal from the outside profile after the bore has been cut the bore will become larger. A larger bore at the muzzle end compared to the chamber end is not good for accuracy.

i get this, and i am still stumped. many rifle builders, and barrel makers will take a barrel you already have and re conture it for you. why would they do this if they new it would be hazardus for accuracy, and therefor there reputation???


also.... is there any pics, or methods or anything that shows the proper way to cut flutes? i was going to attempt this, but i was going to use a ball end mill. do you think that this would work???

If you want nice round bottomed flutes, use a ball mill, if you want them square bottomed, then don't.....
