Barrel recomandation for Modle 700 .270

I have a modle 700 270 that one of my sons use for deer/bear hunting. I was woundering what barrel to get to replace the original barrel for hunting mostly. I would like to shoot VLD so any recomendations on twist? How much improvement in accuracy can I expect? I have no idea the round count on it now as I got it used 10 years ago.

Look at other brands instead.

The 700's don't have a decent safety let alone CRF.

If someone is loading or unloading a rifle in the early hours I prefer that they have a three position safety on that rifle.

If you are intent on keeping the .270 (which by the way is an excellent caliber) simply get about ANY custom barrel and you will do fine with a 1-10 twist.. Bartlien, Brux, Krieger, Rock Creek, etc..etc.. are ALL excellent barrels. However, if you have NOT locked yourself into a .270, I would seriously consider either a "regular" .280 Rem or better yet a .280 Ackley... Either of the aforementioned barrels in 1-9twist will shoot anything you need..

Get your Remington action squarred and trued, a good (Jewell) trigger, along with the barrel / calibers listed above and make sure your stock is properly bedded and you should have a rifle capable of extremely good accuracy! As long as you are considering a new barrel, get everything done along with it>>>it is worth the extra $$$s and time..

Really? I wonder what makes the 700 the most copied and customized action going? Scalloper, if this will be a hunting rifle only, or even mainly, get a barrel contour that is not overly heavy. Also don't make the barrell 28" long if you plan to pack the rifle around. Nothing more miserable than a hunting rifle that is front end heavy. If you can drive right up to your stand and then shoot from a rest, beef the barrel to your hearts content! To shoot the Berger 140 gr. VLDs, use a barrel twist of 1 in 10, or faster. Just sell the rifle and get a better one for your son.

Why replace the barrel on an entry level design that lacks control round feed, a sturdy extractor or a three postion safety that holds the firing pin.

Also the triggers on those 700's and 721/2's are the subject of lawsuits on unintentional discharges. Their bolt handles fall off as well and the locking lug section is brazed onto the bolt body.

Look at the Ruger 77, M70's and Kimbers please!

I hope those boats are ok there on the Maine coast. This is one heck of a wind storm.

IMHO....
Keep the Reminton action, unless you go custom, they are hard to beat..
I've smithed 700's for over 40 years and only replaced one extractor, and only one bolt handle ever came off and that was on a PTG bolt that was not done right...
The 700 will feed as good as any will, and they just have that nice quality look to them..
Keep the wanna bee's away from the trigger and you'll not be having problems with them either..

you will always find some one who has a burr under there blanket for anything made, I have seen Win, Ruger and Savage with problems, so don't get sidetracked by the above post.
the 700 is a fine rifle, the triggers after early 1980 are a design improved following a lawsuit and the 270 is a great round.

I agree to the suggestion of a 280 as it is almost identical but with more choices of bullets if you reload. the AI version is a fantastic choice, I have had 2.

get the action trued, as suggested, change the trigger to a later rem one if you have the early version, and for hunting, I would choose a Douglas top end bbl 24" 9 twist.

The barrel choice comes down to money, Krieger, Bartlien are great but for a hunting rifle a lower grade Shilen is hard to beat. Use the std 1-10 twist and try the Berger VLD's in 130, 140, and 150 gr.

Controlled round feed,unless your staring down the barrel at a water buffalo or something like that the remington will do and does everything that any other can do smoother.Like preacher said,in my life I have only 1 extractor get lazy and had to replace it. If you want one to beat,why not the old warhorse 30-06 as its taken more game in america except for the 30-30.Its a great cartridge and if you need ammo,almost everyone carrys that cartridge on the shelf.

You are correct. #99 just has a burr. A Savage 99 doesn't have a controlled round feed. I* do put a PT&G 3 pos safeties on my Remington and clones because they look cool. Never had a factory one fail me. Even though I have never had a Remington bolt handle come off I have Dan Armstrong weld a custom on because the factory handle is ugly.
Now I do have Enfields and Mauser customs with control round feed. My Remingtons have never failed to feed when a grey squirrel or white tail charged me.

M99's are control round feed. CRF! 8)

I have a takedown model and sure don't call it a CRF. Seems mine is a lever gun, right. In spite of all of this, this wasn't his question. He was wanting a barrel recommendation for his 270.
Any of your top barrel mfg. have barrels that will enhance your rifle. If you stay with the 270, 30-06, and say 280 you will not have feeding problems.

Thanks for all of the replies. I currently load for .270, 30-06 and 7mm Mag I do have dies for 300win mag as well. I was kind of surprised with the suport of changing to the 280 as there does not look like much of a difference, kind of falls between 06 and .270.
I have shot 70%+- of my whitetail deer with a .270 and been very pleased over the years same with black bear.
Would this action and bolt face work for a 7mm Mag?

A good 'smith can easily open the bolt-face to .532 which is needed for a 7mmMag.. The difference between the 7mm bore and a .270 is purely in the sheer amount of good / better bullets for the 7mmBore. The .270 is an awesome round... I had a few in my lifetime, however, it can not compete with a .280A.I. and the availability of excellent .284 bullets..

My 99F .358 is CRF. I just checked it again. However your takedown may well be not?

I have not looked close at other 99's for CRF.

My tang safety goes on (back) with the lever open however it will fire when the lever is closed. Thus it's not like a M70's safety nor even a Ruger 77 where at least the trigger safety will work.
