Barrel mounted Picatinny rail question

I have a Remington Rolling Block with a HV contour barrel with Unertl style mounts. I want to switch to a Picatinny Rail which would be mounted on the barrel and have a cantilevered extension of several inches to the rear. The cantilevered part of the rail need to be milled to a thinner section to clear the receiver (1/8") and the total length can be as long as I want. The bottom of the rail needs to be milled concave to sit down on the barrel without rocking. Should I just by a 1/2" blank rail and have my gunsmith go from there or is there already one that is partially meeting these specifications? Hole spacing is not too critical as the barrel will need to be drilled and tapped anyway. Thanks for any ideas. Tom

Investigate the EGW mount for the Model 52 Win. It mounts in the rear Unertl holes and cantilevers back and above the action. I have used it on Martini's in addition to the 52 Win, Rem 40X, etc. John

Instead of showing up at your gunsmiths' shop with a rifle and parts, ask him! He may have a better idea of what is needed. I constantly have folks coming to the shop with a firearm and some 'attachment' they want mounted, that haven't thought it all the way thru, or didn't know there was a better, similar item that might even have saved them a dollar or two or served the purpose even better than what they carried in. (This doesn't apply if you're the kinda' guy that brings auto parts to your mechanic and tells him how to fix your vehicle. In which case, expect to pay extra.)

Shortgrass, that is a pretty good idea! I will also look into the Model 52 mount as that is the general idea that I have. Thanks. Tom

Looking at the 52 mount it has only 2 mounting screws. I think I need a longer one so as to allow a minimum of 3 screws. I was thinking of this in a 1/2" milled down on the end to cantilever over the receiver. http://www.practicalpage.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=124 Tom
