barrel mirage shield?

What are you using for the barrel mirage shield ? I see all kind of different material being used. What's preferred for the different disciplines of shooting (F-Class, F TR, Sling shooters, etc...)?

Most tend to use too narrow a strip = mini-blind slats. Performance-wise a 4" wide strip of white or buff color target paper will be hard to beat.

I use a 3" wide price of corogated plastic. It's held on with the typical velcro spots and 2 rubber bands (we get some really nasty winds here).

Actually the portable fan works better. Even guys with mirage shields use them. Watch the heat coming from a muzzle break and the end of the barrel. On some days it really comes from the end of the barrel. The fan moves it away and clears up the sight picture. Matt

Denys, if that be the case, what about ANY of the "devices" that allow the "Sled Feet" of most of the better Bi-Pods to S-L-I-D-E better on, i.e. S.E.B. front mats?

Those are mentioned in the rules, read about bipods.

There you go it make shooting easier…… I think in that case the shooting matts should be banned, they make it too easy you should have to lay in the mud or stones or sand. How can seeing better be detrimental to the sport???…….. . jim

I would think that blocks or ammo boxes to old shells would fall under that rule. A scope and a lot of other things should be included then. Matt

Matt, at Denys request I did go and read the rules. He is correct about the shooting / bi-pod mats. But I do think you are on to something. Not a "scope" per se, but a "Spotting Scope" would be considered a "device" that would "facilitate shooting" and are NOT mentioned in the rules>>unless I missed it somewhere as I did not "dig" to find out every nuance of "the rules". But it would appear to be in the same category as a battery operated fan. And trust me, many F-Class, both F-Open as well as F-T/R shooters use them..

Thank You.. I am glad that I was wrong on both ideas. Personally, I think that ANYTHING you can add, like a fan or heat shields or whatever, as long as you still have to get behind a rifle and shoot the thing, should be allowed. Look at the Bi-Pods we have now. I am quite certain that the "writers of the rules" never envisioned what we have now! However, "finding ways to improve shooting" such as those bi-pods SHOULD be encouraged! As long as the "shooter" is still the "biggest or main part" of the shooting "system" why would any rule inhibit progress to shoot better? Thanks again for bringing that to my attention..

At the 1993 NRA LR matches, Camp Perry, on a particularly hot torrid day in August; I plopped down on the mat wearing my leather shooting jacket with a long-sleeved sweat shirt underneath to round out the drudgery of shooting "sling". By the time the prep period was finished, I was profusely dripping sweat all over, especially from my forehead and onto my shooting glasses. But, I had a plan! I pulled out me little battery powered fan that I'd previously tried at a local club match and flicked it on. You see...I was not so much interested in blowing off barrel mirage (as we're talking here) as I was for just cooling my face! Laid the fan on the mat under the rifle blowing right up under my face. What a relief, sweat was soon gone, eyes and vision were sharply clear; and the hum of the little fan although a little loud was pleasing to hear. After getting off a few good shots, a line official appeared at my firing point. He politely told me that I needed to either turn off my fan or leave the range, and he cited some NRA HP rule that I was not familiar with. Naturally, I began to sweat again.

Yes, my very competitive, and informed, score keeper had snitched on me! And that's the point for some of you that claim to be making a rule violation, or observing others doing it, for some time as if that makes it all right!! I can only say that if you happen to be shooting F-Class on a point in by vicinity, and I hear the hum of your fan and your score keeper calling out a steady stream of X's and 10's...and I'm only getting 9's and 10's, you might soon expect a visit from a line official. On the other hand, if you are getting the stream of 9's/10's and I'm getting the X's/10's, and I'm feeling the pleasure of cool air on my face from your fan....................
