Barrel marking

I need some feed back on marking barrels. Is there a good and reliable way to use etching as opposed to inscribing? The New Hermes machines seem to be getting pricy! Appreciate any info.

I bought a modern jewelers (diamond tipped scribe) pantograph. I bought 5/16 New Hermes letters and numbers. I made pillars to fit on the table part of the pantograph where my barrels are held during the engraving process. It works well and I don't think I have more than $600.00 invested. I have several set of fonts script and print.

I recently got a electro etcher from IMG Electromark. I love it. The result is second to none and very elegant.

looks outstanding. what did that setup run you? where did you get your template made?

IMG has an art dept that makes photo stencils to just about any font or graphic that you can think of or creat on your own computer.
The machine was an even grand, which I though about for over a year, but after biting the bullet, I couldn't be happier with the result.
Stampers and end engravers are very limited in their results, where an electro etcher is basically only limited by your imagination.

Are you talking about the machine to engrave?

If you understand how the electro etching machines work, you can do something like this without stencils and do it real cheap.

Is that etched into the depth of the steel or only on the surface?

It's etched. I used letters that stick on, then taped around them with electrical tape, etched it, and then removed tape and letters. ;)

Looks like a ransom letter for a kidnapped Shehane rifle. ;D
Just kid'n. It's looks like a good low cost alternative to a photo stencil.

Can you please elaborate? I have stenciks ordered from a knifemaker and have been doing research on the machines. I am going the charger route. What are yall using for electrolyte solution?

They make decent personal desktop computer cutting machines that are reasonable in price to cut out fonts and graphics....would be perfect for etching. Amazon sells few and this one here looks pretty nice...

It would come in hand for other things as well...maybe paint masks for stock painting/airbrushing...your wife's scrapbooking, lol

IMG supplied me with about half a dozen different types of electrolyte. Some definitely work better on some types of metal than others. I use type 110A for 400 series stainless if you want to just call them up and order a quart. It seems to work the best and allows deep etching to about .005-.006".

edit: I should mention that the deep etch depth is produced with a 40V machine.
