barrel marking after set back?

Are you required to re-stamp the caliber on a barrel after set back, if it is no longer visible without removing the barreled action from the stock? Seems to me this has been answered before, but darned if I can find it.

You mean the guy that set it back did not index the barrel to have the markings show? ;)

I would put it on there, I don't know if it's required or not, but I think it's nice to be able to see the caliber that it's chambered for.

Normally "the guy" would do that, but in this case, the set back was to resolve an issue on a new-ish chamber. I was trying to remove as little as possible to preserve length. It worked out just fine (in fact, I'm bringing it to the SW Nationals), but I marked it before I decided I couldn't live with it. ;) Oops.

I'll just re-mark it and stop being lazy.

Late reply but gotta add my .02. If a smith lets a rifle out of his shop that doesn't have the caliber clearly visible.....bad juju. If said smith is unsure of how to reindex existing caliber markings on a barrel ...... bad juju. If said smith makes a perfect gun, you know the caliber but then sell it and some yoyo that bought it sticks in a wrong caliber ammo and BLAM! Not saying liability, just the wrong thing to do. Have it marked, and be happy.

Your point is taken, but the only thing this barrel will be doing when I'm done with it will be to get carved up into parts, gages, spacers and other useful stuff.
