Barrel Makers, Who do you use?

Been contemplating a new barrel for a Varmint rifle lately, My question is who should I purchase from? I've looked at Shilens, Harts, Douglas, Pac-Nor, Broughton, Brux, Lilja and others. Who provides the best barrel, shortest turn around time and best value? I also looked at McGowen's and I like the price and turn around time but what of the accuracy of these barrels? I don't need a BR record setter, just a fine accurate varmint gun.

Bruno's has a lot of barrels in stock, especially Kriegers. Can be had in 3 days. I've had really good luck out of Kriegers, Liljas, Shilen, and Harts. I stay clear of Douglas. Just my opinion.

Several guys here also have new blanks that they would sell. When you decide what you want I would post a WTB on these classifieds.

I was thinking about getting a threaded, chambered, and crowned barrel from somebody. Unfortunately I don't know of any, much less a really good, gunsmith in my area to do the work and I can't run a lathe to save my life.

If you go that route then you will need a savage action with barrel nut to set headspace. Prethreaded barrels with no barrel nut system are short chambered meaning you have to get a reamer and finish headspacing.

My only experience with buying barrels has been with Krieger, and their shop is just up the road. I have had the chance to shoot with some of their guys as well, and they are genuinely helpful and sincere. I have bought three AR barrels, and they have all shot great, with on time delivery as well as custom work like fluting, etc. Can't say the barrel is what's limiting my ability to shoot better.

That's simple

Krieger!!!

No, wait........Lilja....yep lilja...

no.......Schillen...for sure.

UMMM waaait....Hart.

Broughton (sp) Absolutly...

Hold on......Spencer! The end...

aaaaaahhhhh Brux..I think...???/

Oh krap.....NEVER MIND!!!!!

I have used them all and are all good.

Call nothlander supply and he can supply you with a prethreaded and chambered remage barrel and the nut which turns your remington into a savage type barrel system and you can set the headspace at home with headspace gauges. It is simple and foolproof.

headhunter1111: I've bought a lot of Hart barrels, and have never had a bad one yet. I will call them and place the phone order, giving them the info including contour, they will quote a 6 week wait, and usually at exactly 4 weeks the brown truck arrives. I've also bought Kreiger's and Shilen's from Lester Bruno if he has what I need in stock, so it arrives in about a week. Sinclair is also a good choice for Krieger and Bartlein if they have what you need, their stock limited to 6mm, varmint and heavy contours with limited twist choices.

I have shot Broughton for years and have been pretty satisfied for them. I shot Mr. See an email a couple of months ago to ask his opinion on the Brux's as I was thinking about purchasing a Brux. Well I pulled the trigger on a Brux and had a 6.5x47L stuffed together and could not be happier. The break in or shall I say lack of was fantastic. The barrel did not make copper after the second shot. I have shot several groups out of it with a different powder, primer, seating depth combo everytime and have yet to shoot a group larger than .401" I believe I am sold on Brux barrels.

As was said, Brunos has Kriegers in stock. I was looking through the selection and I wasn't seeing any of Krieger's 5R barrels available. Does anybody know where you can get an 'off the shelf' Krieger or Broughton 5R?
