barrel life difference 260 vs 7mm-08

ghermitage:

There is very little difference in the 260 and 7mm08 barrel life. Both with resonable laods should last 2400-2900 with out a set back. If you set-back at 2000 to 2500 you will most likely get 3600-3800 rounds. This is contingent in what loads you shoot.

The barrel life of the 308W is said to 5000+ rounds. Does all of this benefit occur between 7mm-08 and 308W, and none between 260 and 7mm-08?

The barrel life of a heavy, match barrel 708, shooting 168 Serria's is 3000 rds. I shot out 2 barrels, shooting across the course, and they both went at that number. My 260's are shot out at 2600 rds. With set back, you can get 3600 rds out of the barrel. Hope this helps.

Okay, looking at a larger spread of bore sizes on the same case, how about the difference in barrel life between 243W, 260R, 7mm-08, 308W?

I have seen figures of 1500 rounds for 243, 5000+ for 308, but I would expect a smooth function of barrel life versus bore size on this same case.

Maybe its a smooth function, but it doesn't appear to be a direct relationship with bore diameter, or even bore area. A .308 has about 60% more x-sectional bore area than .243, but the evidence is for about 200% more life.

No, I wouldn't expect a linear relationship with bore size or bore area, but I wouldn't expect any irregularity in how barrel life progresses with bore size.

Actually, on that data there could still be a linear relationship between x-sectional bore area and barrel life with the slope constant,m) in the linear relationship not being 1 e.g. y = mx + c with m not equal 1.

That's probably a reliable number then. Any idea what the barrel life would be with 120gr VMax? Also, does 5000+ rds for 308 seem right to you i.e. a full 2000 rds improvement for .62mm increase in bore diameter?

I'm on my third 260 barrel with using same components in all three. 2 Hart's and 1 Broughton.

The first Hart went 4600+ before dying in a big way. The realistic accurate life was probably maxed out at 3500 or before.

My second Hart is on my other 260 that has around 1600 rds through it.

The Broughton has 1281 rds fired. It's my first Broughton so it will be interesting to see how it lasts.

My next barrel will more than likely be a Bartlein just to see if the cut-rifling does indeed give longer life.

I'm wondering that too. I have just over 2300 on a Krieger and I would like to know when it will be over, more or less.

This is different question but along the same area. I have read the 6mmBR is reliable for 2000-2500 rounds. If this is true then why would the .30BR provide 8000 rounds of benchrest performance?

bbl life in the 7mm-08 is absolutely better than that of a 260 Rem given the same bbl manufacturer. My 260 X-course bbl was beat @ around 2200 rounds..the 7mm08 was gone @ just over 3000 rounds. That is a big differencein my opinion. 800 rounds from a bbl is a season to some shooters.

My 260 Rem Krieger is still going strong,and by that I mean holding 3/4 X ring elevation or better at 600) with 2300 rounds through it.

Since this post has some informative views on barrel life, I would be really interested on all views/experiences regarding the following:
7mm Rem Mag barrel life, 2900fps, Border Sendero Profile, 168gr SGK's, only hunting, no competition;
Straight .284 Winchester, 3000 fps, Bartlein Bull Barrel,168gr Bergers, only competition;

remember its the speed that kills.

what does sec density has to do with it, can`t you see the smaller the caliber the faster they are...

the faster the bullets travel the more they will erode the barrel/throat.
