Barrel length vs width for accuracy.

Im trying to keep this clean...

But if someone was looking to build a rifle with weight and accuracy in mind what would be the better choice? Something like a 18" bull barrel or a thiner 24" barrel.

I know the next rifle i want to put together is going to be more for long range hunting and/or hopefully some practical shooting matches. I may stick with the 260AI but i would like to have something with a little more powder like a 300 winchester mag.

Pound for pound what is going to give the accuracy and long range performance?

The shorter thicker barrel would in theory of all things equal be stiffer and potentially be more accurate.

A longer barrel will provide more velocity potential up to the point where friction starts to slow the bullet before it exits.

As mentioned, shorter is stiffer and usually more accurate. The problem is that short barrels mean less velocity and longer time of flight and wind drift. The preferred bullets are also heavy for caliber and usually need at least 26" to get full velocity. Another consideration is if you can live with the extra weight, it makes long sessions and accurate shooting easier.
