This pertains to the 6.5x55. I have a vintage Swedish Mauser that is a very good shooter and would like to rebarrel an old Savage 110FP to 6.5x55. My question is what would a good barrel length be for the Savage? The Mauser has a long barrel which unless I'm mistaken had much to do with powder burn rates available in 1915. If that is even partially true then given the powders available today, I should be able to get satisfactory performance out of it with a much shorter barrel. So then, I'm looking for a semi compact rig that is accurate say out to 400 yds. and am basically clueless as to twist rate and barrel length. Is 24" too short for this cartridge or would I need 26" Obviously, I will want a twist rate that will stabilize a 140 gn bullet. Please give me your expert answers. I welcome all input.
