Barrel identification

I was wondering if barrel makers etch or stamp their barrels with their logo or name. Do you know if gunsmiths mark the barrels they chamber? Thanks

I thought by law they stamp the caliber on the barrel but I could be wrong. Anything extra will depend on the smith or company. I’ve seen logos on barrels which is cool, free advertising.

A barrel blank is typically stamped at one end with the pertinent bore/groove info, etc. However, the stamped surface will be removed upon chambering. Gunsmiths often (if not almost always) mark a finished barrel. Whatever markings they choose to engrave are typically visible on one side just above the edge of the stock. Sometimes, an individual gunsmith might also mark a barrel with their specific stamp (i.e. a maker's mark). That mark is often located on the bottom side of the barrel just in front of the edge of the action. It is usually necessary to remove the barreled action from the stock in order to see the maker's mark.

ATF requires us to mark barrels with the Manufacturer's business name and Name of town you're located. The mark has to be a least .003 in depth. I will mark the barrel with the chambering and neck diameter if its a chamber that requires case neck turning.

I have never seen a custom barrel marked with “name of town you’re located in”

Joshb,
Read the OP post again, he asked if gunsmiths mark the barrels they chamber.

Yes, All of the 07 FFL holders that build or rebarrel rifles are required by Federal Law to mark the barrel to ATF specifications as I described. Believe me, They check it. The last gentleman that inspected my shop wanted to see the spec sheet on my equipment to confirm I was able to meet the requirements.

I've been a full time Riflesmith for a almost 30 years. I don't know how these other shops get away with not marking barrels with the name of their business and the town they conduct business. I've seen rifles come in my shop from other shops that don't have anything on the barrel. Not even the Chambering. I guess the guy that put it together doesn't think its important information if the rifle changes hands. Grenades with stocks.

That is a new one to me also. I have never seen a custom barrel for the companies or gunsmiths I have dealt with over many years, mark a barrel like that.
If they have had a marking on them, it was only the caliber and neck information.

I have a custom that I told smith not to mark it,that way if stolen they would have to take it to someone and lack of knowledge would signal STOLEN.
