Barrel groves

How many groves are you guys running in your 6 BRAs or does it make a difference im going to order a barrel soon so I’m trying to get as much info as possible I think I’m going with .237 bore I think?

Lots of good reports on Krieger 4 groove 1-8” twist barrels. But Bartlein, Krieger, ABC, Brux, Hawk Hill and other premium barrel makers would also be a great choice. All the premium barrel makers produce top notch barrels.

Ok thanks guys

I think this question was aimed at getting comments/insight into why 4 vs 6 groove. Needs to know use. Is one better at stabilizing XX weight bullets, etc.

I’ve seen three groove, four groove, five groove and six groove barrels shooting well with the 6BRA. Most will be 7.5” to 8” twist to stabilize the usual 103 to 108 grain bullets. Sometimes I think we worry too much about the number of grooves or even the style of the rifling (think 5R, or gain twist). It’s the consistency of the barrel that is most important and we are fortunate to have lots of manufacturers making high quality barrels these days. I have never shot a .236” but from what I’ve heard they may pressure up a little quicker than a .237”. You may have quite a wait to get a barrel though, so grab one when you find one available.

Dave.

If your favorite barrel makers offer's something like 5R I would try it. I would not go out of my way or switch barrel makers. 3 grove in 1:7.5, 1:7.7, 1:7,8 in 3 groove and 4 grove are well tested. There is some evidence though that a "R" radiused cut might be advantageous but last I checked no one has one in BR with 5R barrel. That said I do not follow the sport close enough to really know.

I have 3, 4, 5 and 6 grove over the years on 6mm and to be honest I do not think it matters. Get a twist faster than you need for the longest and heaviest LED/VLD bullets today by 1 so you future proof. That said I am not a BR guy so for hunting and any shooting where you are shooting with out a nice solid bench and rest it does not matter!
