Barrel grooves?

I am going to put a new 6BR barrel on my BAT action. It will be 8 twist, but HOW MANY GROOVES,3,4 or 6) ???
Thanx

I have a couple of four groove Kriegers that shoot and clean well.

Current crop of bbls are 5R from Bartline. Excellent so far.

I don't think it matters much as long as it's from a reliable manufacturer.

Some posit the odd-numbered style reduce bullet stress, but I can't vouch for the validity of that opinion one way or the other.

There are folks shooting the heck out of all kinds of targets with 3, 4, 5, 6 groove barrels at any distance you care to shoot these days.

Go to the 6mmbr.com polls page.

The overwhelmong choice for 6BR barrels is Krieger and they produce 4 and 6 groove. I sell more 6mm barrels than anything and the overwhelming choice is 4 groove. I have never put a Krieger 4-groove on a 6BR that did not produce consistent .2MOA or better 1-hole groups.

Ive got an 8 twist Broughton 5C that I really like. It shoots very well and cleans easy too.

And Mr North is nice to work with..

Regardless of the number of groves and lands, the amount of land vs grove surface is the same. But what is different, is the number of land edges, and land to grove corners. 6 for a 3 grove and 12 for a 6 grove. So it makes since that a 3 grove might be easier to clean, but other than that, they will likely shoot the same.

My vote goes to the Bartlein 5R barrel. Bartlein Barrels are fast becoming the top choice of many shooters. My rifle is shooting in the .0's and .1's. Here are few pictures of some groups I shot with the 105grn Lapua.

Ive had some Rock Creek 5 grooves and Benchmark 3 grooves do real well for me lately.

I think your better off with a cut rifling barrel, rather than a button rifled barrel, but there hard to find, and cost more.
The main reason there batter, other than a longer life is, your first cold, oiled barrel shot will be right on the POA.
This is all important for true snipper riles, where you cant take 5 fouler shots first. Your target may not hang around that long.

I agree with first shot that counts !! I'm retired from the service and want one shot one ... But in the competitive mode...clean bore and precise shots count as well, 10 of them. My old M24 has no claim like the stuff available out here now. I ordered 2 Krieger 3 grove 30 inch to put on a 6x47 Lapau..I like the fact of fouling less and clean bore shot after shot...I've had good success with these in the past at short range,100-300) so I'll try them at the longer ranges,600-1000). I just wanted info from what folks are trying!!! More info the better..Never stop learning the ways of shooting better no matter what the range or target !!
Thank you all for the input.....
