barrel dia turning

Hi
Looking at buying a barrel of 1.200" dia. Need to reduce the dia to 1.120" to match the original sporting barrel shank.
Do I have the dia turned down when setting up for chambering etc or buy the barrel at the right dia.

Are you talking about the shank diameter or the taper? 1.200" or 1.120" seems like an odd diameter for a no-contour barrel, but you didn't mention the rifle so it could be.

If you are just talking about the shank diameter (the barrel in front of the recoil lug to where the taper starts), then I think it would be easier to just have the barrel maker do it. I think most of them will on a custom order. At least the barrel maker I work with most often doesn't have a problem with it. Probably easier to have the barrel maker do it if it's a no-contour barrel diameter you are after too.

Sounds like a Savage large shank barrel.

If it's a tapered barrel, you can turn the barrel down until the barrel diameter drops off below 1.120" and you'll be good. Turn it between centers to ensure best concentricity.

If it's a straight contour barrel, you are better off ordering a barrel with correct OD.
