Barrel Cut ?

Hi

I have "inherited" an ex Palma style 308 Win. This here gun has a 27" barrel on it. I have to tilt the rifle to one corner of my safe to get her in...painfull.
Now, my question. Would it be advisable if I wanted to cut her to 23". This barrel has a 1-14 twist, and I was told by someone that these barrels are made to that lenth with the 14 twist in mind, and by cutting it, I may just cause a total inbalance. True or just a story ?
I would appreciate some technical insight into this, as my knowledge and understanding to lenth and twist is somewhat murky..
Thanx

Palma matches are fired using 155 Gr. bullets. The 14 twist stabalizes these bullets very well at, or near, 3000 fps. That, and sight radius, is the reason for the longer barrels on Palma rifles. Your barrel will probably do fine if cut to 23" as long as you don't go to bullets that are too heavy.

I have an obermeyer palma barrel on my win 70 that was originally 28 inches. I cut off the turned down portion from the front site, recrowned it, set it back a little and cut a fresh chamber and it shoots great so long as I use bullets that it was designed for so you should have no problem.

Thanx for the advises offered.
I also asked about cleaning my big bores on another forum section, and was given the following site link..wich also answered my barrel question. Really amazing stuff these guys talk about.
